Two towns in the South Hams have been revealed as the best and least affordable places to buy a property in Devon.

New research from property website Zoopla revealed that Ivybridge is the most affordable place to buy a house in the county.

The property website took the average household income and house price - sourced from Zoopla estimates in November 2018 - in each Devon town and divided the figures to discover the affordability ratio for each place.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Salcombe in the South Hams was the region’s least affordable town. The figures showed that the resort town has an average household income of £45,755 and an average house price of £664,632, giving Salcombe an affordability ratio of 14.53 – how many times the average income will go into the value of a property.

The most affordable Devon town was Ivybridge, which is also in the South Hams and just 15 and a half miles from Salcombe. With an average household income of £41,988 and an average house price of £292,465, Ivybridge had an affordability ratio of 6.97.

Towns including Torquay, llfracombe and Cullompton were in the top 10 best affordable towns, while Budleigh Salterton, Umberleigh, Totnes and Dartmouth were listed among the top 10 least affordable towns.
