A store and post office which has been at the heart of the community in one of Devon’s most desirable villages for more than 200 years has just been sold – to first-time buyers.

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co completed on the sale of Drewsteignton Village Stores & Post Office which sold off an asking price of £390,000.

At the heart of the community for more than two centuries, the store had been owned and operated by the Maynard family for 45 years, with retirement prompting the decision to sell.

Situated within Dartmoor National Park, Drewsteignton is home to National Trust attraction Castle Drogo - the last castle to be built in England.

Ideally located in the market square, Drewsteignton Village Stores benefits from the high levels of footfall and is also well regarded by the local community.

New owners and first time entrants to the sector Mr and Mrs Payne said they look forward to carrying on the hard work that the previous owners have put into the business and plan to introduce a wider offering to enhance the experience for customers.

Mrs Payne said: “We were set on this store from the moment we laid eyes on it. As first-time buyers we found the whole process from start to finish was handled very professionally by William Trott of Christie & Co – they were always on hand to support us and help however they could.”

The recently refurbished village shop comprises an 850 square foot sales area, post office counter and additional storage areas.

The business currently trades seven days a week, offering a range of groceries and household goods, as well as newspaper rounds services.

Spacious four bedroom owner’s accommodation is provided adjacent to the shop and the property also features a beautifully presented private garden and a large barn, which presents a number of development opportunities.

Business Agent at Christie & Co William Trott who handled the sale said: “Since the store’s initial launch to the market, it took us 12 weeks to find a buyer. Mr and Mrs Payne were highly motivated to acquire the site and we wish them all the best in their new business venture.

“Buyers in the South West continue to look for village stores in high profile locations such as Drewsteignton, where there is a more personal touch to retailing, and the sale of Drewsteignton Village Stores reinforces the continued trend.”
