Exeter City manager Matt Taylor is closing in on his third summer signing with the club in advanced talks with a goalkeeper.

The Grecians chief did not name names, or who the selling club was, but confirmed that it would be a free transfer with the selling club insisting on a sell-on clause, which is the stumbling block over the deal being finalised right now.

"We had positive meetings and we are in one situation where we are waiting on a player who is under contract, but would sign on a free transfer and there would be a percentage of a sell-on if the player was to move on again," Taylor explained.

"I can’t name names in terms of the club, but that’s where we are at with one of the goalkeepers but these things take a few days longer than expected when you are getting the final details sorted out.

"If you are not paying a fee for a goalkeeper, then the club that are letting him go for free want a good percentage and we are just trying to get that down a little bit."

Taylor remains without a goalkeeper right now after seeing Christy Pym head to Peterborough UNited and James Hamon and Felix Norman both released when their contracts expired at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

He has spoken of his desire to have one experienced goalkeeper to go alongside a younger one - and even the possibility of a third goalkeeper on the books.

"I am still looking at an experienced goalkeeper to go alongside that as well," Taylor added.

"It could be today, it could be Monday next week although, it sounds stupid, but not many clubs are as organised as ourselves in terms of getting hold of people at this time of year. Certainly, when it has to go to a CEO or board level where the final decision is made, it takes a bit of time.

"We are lucky as we generally get things done pretty quickly and smoothly, but you are dependent on other clubs."

One goalkeeper linked with a move to the Grecians in January was West Bromwich Albion's Alex Palmer.

The 22-year-old has often been involved in the first team picture at the Hawthorns, but without making a first team appearance and he ended the campaign as an emergency loan signing by relegated Notts County, when their first choice goalkeepers were suspended and injured.

Palmer signed a new deal at the Hawthorns recently, but the opportunity of more first team game time could be enough to persuade him to head to the Westcountry to further his career.
