Goalkeeper Alex Bass has left Torquay United after League One Portsmouth recalled him from his season-long loan deal at Plainmoor.

Gulls manager Gary Johnson, who had planned to 'rotate' Bass' and his contracted goalie Shaun MacDonald over the Christmas/New Year period, reported: "Portsmouth have an injury to their second keeper, so Alex has gone back.

"We wish him all the best, because he is going to be a very good goalkeeper when he has gained a bit more experience.

"We are still well covered, because Shaun has done so well, and we also have George Burton as No.2."

Bass, 20, signed in the summer by former United boss Gary Owers, played eight National League South games for United and kept five clean sheets.

Johnson also hinted that 16-year-old Academy starlet Olaf Kozsela will play at least part of Saturday's FA Trophy tie at Boreham Wood.

"I think Alex is ready to show us what he's got. He is 16, but he looks like a man judged by the way he's been training with us," he said.

"I am quite excited to see where he is in his development, but I would not involve him if I didn't feel he was ready to perform or if it was going to put him back a couple of months."
