Ricky Gervais has confirmed that he's started work on the second series of his Netflix hit After Life.

The black comedy sees Gervais play grieving local reporter Tony, who repeatedly contemplates suicide following the death of his wife Lisa.

Taking to social media, Gervais shared a picture of himself holding a first draft of the second series' script.

He wrote alongside the picture: "Writing is hard. Rewriting is fun. Drinking wine when you’ve just finished a first draft is f**king great."

After Life's second series was confirmed back in April, with Netflix revealing that the comedy-drama would return for another six episodes in 2020.

On the show's renewal and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the first series, Gervais said: "I have never had a reaction like this before. It's been insane. And heartwarming. But now I have to make sure the second season is even better so I'll probably have to work much harder than usual. Annoying really."

This came shortly after Gervais all-but-confirmed Tony's story wasn't over, as he announced he'd soon be starting work on the follow-up.

"Once again, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your amazing tweets about #AfterLife," he tweeted. "I've never had a reaction like it. I have a spring in my step as I skip towards writing series 2."

After Life series one is available on Netflix.
