Of all the many, many Marvel projects in the works for streaming service Disney+ (Marvel and Disney announced another bunch of 'em last night), the one that intrigues us the most is Marvel's What If...?.

An animated series featuring cast members from the movies like Josh Brolin and Michael B Jordan, What If...? will re-tell stories from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – but with twists.

One story that has been rumoured for a while and has now been officially confirmed with a first look is Agent Peggy Carter (voiced by Hayley Atwell) receiving the super soldier formula and becoming Captain America... or rather, Captain Carter.

In the footage screened at the D23 Expo, super Peggy throws a shield emblazoned with the British flag, flips over a car and fights alongside a powerless Steve Rogers who is piloting some old-school Iron Man armour.

Attendees were also treated to a clip of a zombie Captain America throwing a shield at Bucky, while The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) narrates about alternate worlds and infinite possibilities.

Hayley Atwell was also at D23, where she thanked the fans for their passion and for bringing Peggy back.

"It feels like the gift that keeps on giving," Atwell said. "The fans, they love Peggy, they've brought her back."

Marvel's What If...? will consist of 23 episodes, with each one focusing on a different MCU movie. The series will premiere on Disney+ in 2021, while the service itself launches November 12.
