An incoming senior at New Albany High School and four classmates were injured — one seriously — when their SUV rolled over in Genoa Township.

Michael Lucey, 17, died later from injuries suffered in the Sunday night crash, according to an email that New Albany High School Principal Ken Kraemer sent to parents and students on Monday.

One person remained hospitalized, Kraemer said, while the three others were treated for minor injuries.

The crash occurred about 11:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of Red Bank Road east of Hoover Reservoir and south of Center Village Road, the Delaware County sheriff’s office confirmed.

The Genoa Township Police Department is investigating. The crash report indicates that alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.

According to the crash report, Lucey was the front passenger seat when the driver, 17-year-old Dylan McDevitt, lost control of the 2004 BMW XS. The SUV went off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox and rolled several times before coming to rest on its side, the crash report said.

Lucey had to be extricated from the SUV and was taken to Mount Carmel St. Ann’s hospital, where he died.

McDevitt was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital with serious injuries, according to the report.

A backseat passenger, 17-year-old Hayden Gray, was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Two other back seat passengers, Braedon Elwer and Elia Orozco-Trowbridge, both 17, were treated at the scene.

The crash report said all five teens were wearing seat belts.

“It is with great sadness that I share the tragic news of a car accident involving five New Albany High School incoming seniors,” Kraemer wrote.

The principal wrote that the Eagle Crisis Response team would be available for grieving students and friends on Tuesday and Wednesday. People are being asked to call 614-413-8300 between 9 and 11 a.m. Wednesday to talk to a secretary to make arrangements.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these students and all of those affected by this tragic accident,” Kraemer said.
