Two students freshly enrolled in a college in Navsari were suspected of being the terrorists from Aghanistan that have sent all security units in Gujarat into high alert. They were nabbed and released on Wednesday after their documents were verified and found to be legitimate.
Earlier in the month, there were reports from the Intelligence Bureau of four terror-suspects with Afghani passports having infiltrated the state. On August 17, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) also circulated a photo of one of the men, reported to be the leader of the group, with all Special Operations Group units (SOG) posted in the state.
On Tuesday, the Surat Rural police control room received tip-off about two suspicious-looking men seen on a bus headed from Vadodara to Navsari. They relayed the message to the Crime branch, SOG and other senior officials, and an investigation was launched.
They first traced down the informer and interrogated him, which revealed that the two 'Afghani-looking' men were spotted on Monday afternoon. The informer told the police that he suspected the bags they were carrying held explosives.
A SOG team then traced the two suspects to Navsari Agricultural University. "The two students from Afghanistan have enrolled in the university's post-graduation course and reported to the college two days ago," said AM Muniya, police superintendent of Navsari. "They had legitimate passports, visas and all required documents. We released them after crosschecking and verifying their details."
The students travelled from Kabul to Delhi by plane, from where they took a train to Vadodara.
"Around five Afghanistan students studying at the university currently," said Dr Arvind Patel, an in-charge of the Academics Department. "These two had taken admission recently, and Tuesday was their date of reporting."
