Tajzmel Sherman to make college choice Wednesday, West Virginia considered favorite for guard

MORGANTOWN — Tajzmel Sherman, the fourth-leading scorer in junior college’s upper division this past season, plans to choose between West Virginia, Utah and SMU on Wednesday when the NCAA spring signing period opens.

While the Mountaineers are considered the favorites to land the 6-foot-4 combo guard known as “Taz,” offers from Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Cincinnati also are on the table.

Sherman averaged 25.9 points, 4.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds for Collin County (Texas) Community College. He shot 39 percent from 3-point range and 87 percent at the foul line, averaging seven free-throw attempts per game.

As a freshman, Sherman saw offers trickle in from Sun Belt and Conference-USA programs. His recruitment blossomed during a strong sophomore season in which Collin County finished 26-6.

Sherman flew into Morgantown last weekend on the heels of visiting Utah and SMU.

West Virginia received a commitment from another juco shooting guard — three-star prospect Sean McNeil, who plans to sign with WVU over offers from Dayton, Arkansas, Oregon, Minnesota, Missouri and Kansas State.

During the early signing period, the Mountaineers signed two high school players, five-star power forward Oscar Tshiebwe and guard Miles McBride

At least three scholarships remain open for next year’s roster, and there could be a fourth vacancy if center Sagaba Konate remains in the NBA draft.

Other prospects being pursued by West Virginia include Chambersburg, Pa., shooting guard Clarence Nadolny, whose final three includes Texas Tech and Iowa State. The Mountaineers also have long been on the trail of 6-6 forward Kenyon Martin Jr., a three-star California prospect whose father played under Bob Huggins at Cincinnati.
