Train passengers travelling to and from Weymouth, Dorchester and other Dorset stations on the London Waterloo line may be affected by delays further up the line today.

South Western Railway says the problem is the result of a broken down freight train between Winchester and Basingstoke - disruption is expected until 1pm.

According to the network provider, the Basingstoke bound line is blocked and train services may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

A spokesman said: "We have been informed of a broken down freight train between Winchester and Basingstoke, blocking the line towards Basingstoke.

"This means that we cannot operate our trains on this section of track.

"This will affect all services that pass through Winchester that are heading towards Basingstoke.

"Some services from Southampton Central may divert via Fareham and Haslemere - please check online journey planners for further information."
