The flood plains of Yamuna river in Delhi may get flooded later tonight. The river has already crossed its danger mark of 204.83 metres and is currently flowing (5 pm) at 205.24 metres, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC), which is India’s only flood forecasting agency.

Yamuna is already flooded in its upper reaches. To make matters worse Haryana opened the gates of its Hathnikund barrage which has further increased the flow of the river.

The trend of the water level is rising and the situation can turn severe in the event of more rainfall. On the other hand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall for the city in the subsequent days, along with the rest of North India. Delhi received 467 per cent more rainfall than normal on September 25. New Delhi received almost eight times the normal rainfall while north-west Delhi received six times its normal rain.
