The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a fire aboard the freighter St. Clair on Saturday in Oregon, Ohio, just outside Toledo.
The fire was reported about 9:30 p.m. at the Port of Toledo, and the Coast Guard and firefighters from eight local departments responded to the blaze. The 762-foot St. Clair, which regularly hauls taconite, coal and limestone from the Twin Ports, was moored at the CSX Torco terminal for winter repairs. No one was aboard, and the ship carried no cargo.
So far, the Coast Guard’s assessments of the Maumee River have yielded no signs of pollution, the Guard reported.
