SEABROOK — Authorities are investigating a single-vehicle crash early Sunday that killed the driver after the vehicle slammed into a tree off Route 286 and burst into flames.

No one else was in the vehicle when it drove off the road and struck the tree about 3 a.m., according to Seabrook police. The victim’s name is being withheld pending an autopsy by the chief medical examiner’s office.

“This accident is particularly tragic,” acting Police Chief Brett Walker said in a statement. “The Seabrook Police Department extends our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.”

Seabrook police said they received a report about a crash on Route 286 near the town’s wastewater treatment plant, finding the vehicle engulfed in flames upon their arrival.

A crew from the Seabrook Fire Department also responded to extinguish the flames, but it was too late to rescue the driver.

New Hampshire State Police assisted Seabrook police. The state Fire Marshal’s Office is also investigating the fatal accident. Police did not identify the type of vehicle involved in the crash or say whether the victim was a male or female.

Anyone with information on the accident is asked to contact Detective Frank Brown of the Seabrook Police Department at 603-474-5200 or investigator Shana Clark at the state fire marshal’s Bureau of Investigation, 603-223-4289.
