Taylor Swift didn't release a blind-item song about Donald Trump last night on her Lover album, but she did talk about him directly in her interview in the Guardian. Swift made it crystal clear where she stands politically: She started questioning what the U.S. stood for when “all the dirtiest tricks in the book were used and it worked,” she said, seemingly referencing how Trump won the 2016 election and has run the country since.

Swift described the political atmosphere Trump created as “gaslighting the American public into being like, ‘If you hate the president, you hate America.’”

She put it plainly: “We’re a democracy—at least, we’re supposed to be—where you’re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate. I really think that he [Trump] thinks this is an autocracy.”

Swift explained again why she hadn't endorsed a candidate in the 2016 election. She had been coping with her own damaged reputation after Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's Snapchat takedown of her along with watching her mother's cancer relapse. She was at her breaking point but now is “really remorseful for not saying anything.” She told The Guardian she would have endorsed Hillary Clinton and now, she will “do everything I can for 2020”.

Swift made her stance on one final issue clear in her interview. She came out against Tennessee's attempt to impose a near-ban on abortion in the state. “Obviously, I’m pro-choice,” she said. “I just can’t believe this is happening.” You can read The Guardian's full preview piece here. The outlet's full interview with Swift will come out this weekend.
