Minnesota United have confirmed that midfielder Collin Martin will join USL Championship side Hartford Athletic on a loan deal.

Martin, 24, has made 12 starts in 23 appearances over the last two seasons, but has yet to find the pitch in 2019. The move will allow for him to earn steady playing time in a competitive setting. United can recall him at any time.

Martin is the only publicly gay male athlete in the five major sports leagues, having come out on social media on the day of the Loons’ Pride Night match last June.

Hartford Athletic is a new team to the USL Championship this year, based in Hartford, Connecticut. They have struggled so far in their inaugural season, losing all of their first seven games, scoring just three goals while conceding eighteen.
