McDonald's were asked to stop selling milkshakes due to a craze that involves pelting milk drinks at anti-Europe campaigners.

As the Brexit party came to Essex today, fast food restaurants around the UK were asked to withhold sales of the milky drink by police.

The request follows a series of incidents in which far-right figures, such as Tommy Robinson and the Ukip candidate Carl Benjamin have had milkshakes and other food thrown at them by protesters during the European elections campaign.

One witness in Clacton claimed she was told there were "no hot drinks, milkshakes or ice creams" being served around the date of today's visit.

Nigel Farage visited Clacton, Rayleigh and Southend today (Saturday, May 18), although was photographed happily eating an ice cream on the seafront.

Controversial UKIP candidate and You Tuber Carl Benjamin was involved in a fracas on Lemon Quay after a 'masked man' threw a milkshake over him during a rally last week.

Protesters later targeted him and his tour bus with milkshakes in Plymouth.

Now a sign has appeared in the window of the McDonald’s in Edinburgh, ahead of a rally nearby led by Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, saying: “We will not be selling milkshakes or ice-creams tonight. This is due to a police request given recent events.”

A McDonald’s spokesperson confirmed they had been asked to stop sales of its milkshake and McFlurry products on Friday evening, reports the Daily Record.

Scott MacDonald, an online co-ordinator for the Scottish Socialist party, posted a photo of the sign on Twitter, saying it was in “the McDonald’s next to the Farage demo. Someone clearly got wind.”
