A drink-driver was caught at a McDonald's drive-thru – after her own partner shopped her to police.

Dawn Routledge was more than double the legal limit when police arrested her from the fast food restaurant in Huddersfield.

The 42-year-old also had no insurance for the vehicle because she said she couldn't afford to pay for it.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman told Kirklees magistrates that in the early hours of May 26 police received a phone call to say that Routledge had left her Bradford home in her car having drunk alcohol.

The details of her Suzuki Ignis were circulated and just before 1am police found it being driven through the drive-thru of the Leeds Road restaurant.

Mr Bozman said: “They stopped the vehicle and subsequently smelt alcohol as they spoke with her.

“She accepted that she had been drinking.”

Routledge was arrested after failing a roadside breath test. Further police station tests showed that she had 71 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

This just over twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Routledge, of Hill Crest View in Denholme, pleaded guilty to driving while over the prescribed limit and using a vehicle without insurance.

Ian Whiteley, mitigating, explained that the car belonged to his client but had been left parked at her house because she couldn't afford to pay for it to be insured.

He told magistrates that she suffered from mental health issues and it was her concerned partner who contacted police.

Mr Whiteley said: “On this particular day she'd had a drink and said she wanted some space away from the house.

“So for some reason she got into the car, drove it and it was her partner who contacted police.

“She was subsequently stopped at McDonald's and there were no aggravating features in terms of bad driving.”

Magistrates banned Routledge from driving for 20 months. She was fined £140 and ordered to pay £85 costs plus £30 victim surcharge.
