A Huddersfield town centre restaurant has been named best in Yorkshire at a national curry awards.

Lala's, which has restaurants in St George's Square and Wakefield, won Restaurant of the Year in the Yorkshire and Humber category at the 2019 English Curry Awards ceremony in Birmingham on Monday.

Junior Rashid, who owns the Indian diner, said the win was a "fantastic achievement".

"I'm overwhelmed by the award but it is all down to our customers and their support," he said.

"We opened six years ago in a prime location. It was a lot of money to spend and it was a gamble but it's gone really well.

"It's gone from strength to strength."

Junior said the building was derelict for ten years before his company took it over and before that it was a bank.

The interior of Lala's still retains elements of stateliness from its past life.

Junior said: "We have spent a lot of money to restore it to its former glory, putting in the marble and coving."

ExaminerLive's Martin Shaw was impressed by the food during a recent review, raving about the five courses of quality Kashmiri cuisine for just £12.95 on a Monday.

Junior is planning to build on the restaurant's recent success with a full refurbishment next year.

He said: "We don't want it to be just another curry house. We're going to turn it into a restaurant and wine bar with live entertainment.

"There are places in Manchester and elsewhere that have gone down this route but there is not much in Huddersfield."
