Morrisons reveal they deliver over 15m items to stores each day

The supermarket chain, Morrisons, is closing stores across the country which will put many jobs at risk. The grocer revealed the decision was made after a performance review of all of its 494 stores. Four stores across the country have been shut which could put around 400 jobs at risk. Is your local store going?

List of stores closing

1. Crawley

2. Ince near Wigan

3. Shirley in Solihull

4. Swindon town centre

Both the stores in Crawley and Swindon are shutting after just five years of operation and these closures will affect about 240 members of staff.

According to recently data by Nielsen, Morrisons was the worst-performing of the four big supermarket chains over the last three months.

The data showed sales were down by 2.7 per cent and Morrisons’ market share has dropped from 10.3 per cent last year to 10.1 per cent.

A spokesperson for the firm said: "We are constantly reviewing opportunities for new stores and the performance of our existing estate. We are planning to invest in four new stores this year and we are regrettably proposing to close four.

"We will now be going through a consultation process at the stores and will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and, where possible, redeploy our highly valued colleagues within the business.”

The industry research also revealed Morrisons was the fourth most popular supermarket chain behind Tesco, Sainsbury’s and ASDA.

It was gathered over the 12 weeks leading up to 10 August 2019 and showed Morrisons had 9.5 per cent share of the total spend in UK grocery stores.

Tesco came out on top with 26.4 per cent of the share and Sainsbury’s followed with 14.3 per cent and ASDA with 13.4 percent.

Discount supermarket chains, Aldi and Lidl, have grown in their share and it was revealed Aldi also had a 9.5 per cent share of customers.

Lidl followed closely behind with 6.6 per cent and Iceland was at the bottom with 2.3 per cent share in the market.

Last month, Waitrose announced it was closing seven stores to focus on expanding home deliveries.

In the industry research, the chain had just 4.1 per cent of the market across UK supermarkets.
