Theresa May ‘wells up’ when she talks about life after No10 say close friends and aides

The Prime Minister becomes emotional when people raise the issue of what her next move will be, according to former aides who spoke to The Times. While one ex-adviser said Mrs May “wells up” when the subject is brought up, another said: “She doesn’t like to think about what comes next.” This week it emerged Mrs May intends to remain as MP for Maidenhead after a new prime minister is in place, expected to be before the end of July.

One former aide said they see Mrs May “going into charity work, perhaps something to do with social mobility or modern slavery” when her days in politics are over.

During her term as Home Secretary from 2010 to 2016, she introduced the Modern Slavery Bill.

The legislation included tougher sentences and more help for people forced into sex work, labouring and other coercive tasks.

In an interview in 2018 when asked how she unwinds, Mrs May said she enjoys walking outdoors and watching the US show NCIS.

It is a well-known fact that the 62-year-old is a big fan of cooking and she revealed she owns more than 150 cookbooks.

Another former adviser suggested the Prime Minister’s skills in the kitchen could see her become a hit on cook shows but it may not be to Mrs May’s taste.

They said: “She can’t just do Strictly or The Great British Bake Off but I suspect she wold be rather good at those.”

Many former politicians bring in millions of pounds from speaking tours and book deals after they have left the world of politics.

Ms May resigned as Prime Minister last Friday and remains in the post as a caretaker.

In her resignation speech on the steps on Number 10 last month, Mrs May broke down as she said it was an honour to have served “the country I love”.

Her emotional appearance came as a shock to those who knew her well as Mr May is known to be steely and composed.

She said it will always be a regret of hers that she was unable to deliver Brexit.
