Prince Philip died a peaceful death at Windsor Castle on Friday, April 9. The Duke of Edinburgh was 99-years-old when the sad news was confirmed by Buckingham Palace. The Palace published a brief statement today, saying: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the world for the hardest-working member of the Royal Family.
Prince Philip, who retired from his official duties in 2017, has is believed to have carried out more than 22,100 royal engagements.
He is estimated to have given more than 5,000 speeches and presided over 785 charities and organisations.

Speaking from Downing Street today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "He was an environmentalist, and a champion of the natural world long before it was fashionable.
"With his Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme he shaped and inspired the lives of countless young people and at literally tens of thousands of events he fostered their hopes and encouraged their ambitions.
"We remember the duke for all of this and above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen."
What was Prince Philip’s full name?
The British royal consort was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in Corfu on June 10, 1921.
The future husband of Queen Elizabeth II was the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
His German-born grandfather Louis of Battenberg was naturalised as a British subject who served in the British Royal Navy during the First World War.
In 1917, he relinquished his German titles at the request of King George V and assumed the surname of Mountbatten.
Philip also adopted the surname Mountbatten when he became a naturalised British citizen in 1947.
The future Duke of Edinburgh relinquished his royal title, Prince of Greece and Denmark, in the name of love – to marry Princess Elizabeth.
For a brief moment in time, he was known simply as Mr Philip Mountbatten.

On the morning of his wedding in November 1947, King George VI bestowed on Philip the official title of His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh. He was made the Baron of Greenwich the Earl of Merioneth.
The King also appointed Philip a Knight of the Garter which earned him the title Sir.
Since joining the ranks of the British royal family, Philip has also received nearly 50 titles from foreign and commonwealth states.
Most recently he was promoted to Knight of the Order of Australia in 2015, after becoming a companion in of the order in 1988.

What were Prince Philip’s military titles?
On his 90th birthday in 2011, the Queen appointed her husband Lord High Admiral of the Royal Navy – the highest possible rank anyone but the sovereign can hold.
But Philip already had a long-standing career in the Royal Navy and held several titles and important ranks.
The Prince joined the armed forces in 1939 as a cadet, after following in the footsteps of his grandfather who was Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord.
He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Lieutenant on board the destroyer HMS Wallace in 1942, at the very young age of 21.
In 1952 he was further promoted to the rank of Commander, but his career was cut short by the untimely death of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne.
When the Queen ascended to the throne, Philip was named Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps and a Colonel-in-Chief of the British Army Cadet Force.
