'UK NOT in crisis!' MEP highlights Britain SUCCESS story – 'Crisis only in WESTMINSTER'

THE UK is not in crisis but is actually in the middle of a boom, British MEP Dan Hannan has insisted as he warned the chaos was in Westminster.

Brexit: Westminster is in crisis not Britain claims Dan Hannan

Conservative Brexiteer Dan Hannan explained that it was important not to conflate the crisis in Westminster with a crisis in the UK as a whole. Speaking to Euronews this afternoon, he said: “For two and a half years we’ve had this Westminster crisis of MPs trying to wriggle out of the promises that they made about implementing the referendum result. I know it’s easy to slide into saying Britain is in crisis.

“Britain as a whole isn’t in crisis.

“We’ve got the best unemployment figures we’ve ever had, the stock exchange is booming, exports are up, consumer confidence is up.

“But there is a Westminster crisis caused by this absolute refusal to do what the MPs promised to do.”

When Euronews host Tesa Arcilla interjected, saying that the pound wasn’t performing strongly, Mr Hannan fired back: “In general, though given the predictions that we were given during the campaign and given how it has actually worked out…”

Euronews political editor Darren McCaffrey agreed, adding: “It is the best performing currency against the dollar this year, so there is some belief in the system.”

Mr Hannan recently inspired a new hashtag as Twitter users reacted to claims he had got his facts wrong about Irish history.

£HannanIrishHistory was trending after pro-Brexit Tory Mr Hannan used Ireland to make a point about the EU in a comment article.

In particular, he suggested Fianna Fail had won every Irish election between 1932 and 2008, when in fact the liberal-conservative party Fine Gael was in power on six occasions during the period.

When the accuracy of his article was questioned, Mr Hannan said "historians necessarily have different takes on the same event", adding: "Please try to accept that yours is not the only interpretation."

Twitter users were quick to mock the Tory MEP with their own humorous takes on Irish history.

Derek Mooney, an Irish public affairs specialist, referenced Mr Hannan's Fianna Fail claim directly, joking: "Though @fiannafailparty had won every Irish election since 1392, it was dumped by voters after its 2010 £Eurovision entry failed to make the final, this sparked a run on the Euro and the banishment of Louis Walsh to ITV £HannanIrishHistory"

Steve Peers, a lecturer in international law at Essex University, tweeted: "The statue of Oliver Cromwell outside Parliament commemorates the Nobel peace prize which Cromwell won for ending the Irish Civil war £HannanIrishHistory"
