Downtown rain halts Rod Stewart gig as Scotland braces for deluge

Homes and businesses are likely to be flooded and travel disrupted as heavy rain sweeps across parts of Scotland today. The Met Office has issued amber warnings of heavy rain from midnight until early afternoon in East Lothian, parts of Midlothian and eastern Borders areas.

The warning came as Sir Rod Stewart’s outdoor gig in Aberdeen was called off last night due to the weather. The promoters said: “Sir Rod and his team always believe the show must go on and this decision has not been taken lightly. However, due to the high winds and bad weather, it would not be safe to go ahead with the concert.” The show at the AECC has been rescheduled for July 16 and tickets will still be valid.

The Met Office is warning that fast-flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life.

Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads.

Driving conditions are expected to be difficult, while delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely.

The Scottish Government said that the Multi-Agency Response Team will monitor the situation.

Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said: “The rain will likely lead to difficult driving conditions, so I’d urge travellers to plan their journey ahead, drive to the conditions and follow Police Scotland travel advice. Motorists should check with Traffic Scotland before they set off to make sure that their route is available.”

Transport Scotland’s Resilience Room will also operate throughout the day, with experts carrying out inspections of culverts and flooding hotspots, as well as mobilising equipment, ahead of the warnings coming into effect.

A yellow warning of rain covering a wider area of the east, including Edinburgh, is also in force today from midnight until mid-afternoon.

Police are urging motorists to travel with care.
