UK weather: Temperatures set to rise over Bank Holiday

A new record could be set this weekend, as forecasters are predicting warm and sunny conditions for much of the UK. For the south, highs of 30C are possible, with dry and settled weather. The current highest temperature on record for the UK during the Summer Bank holiday weekend is 31.5C which was recorded at Heathrow, London in 2001.

However, this could be beaten as Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington said: “We’ve had a fairly wet and windy August so far, however, that’s going to change this weekend as we see high temperatures, sunshine and light winds return.

“On Saturday and Sunday there’ll be plenty of sunshine across the country with temperatures reaching into the mid-20s Celsius for many - it’ll be warmest in southeastern parts where 30 Celsius is possible.

“By Bank Holiday Monday itself, temperatures will rise further with around 33 Celsius possible in the southeast – which would set a new record for the coming Bank Holiday weekend.”

Miserable cloudy skies and frequent downpours have dampened August so far, but this hot weather could see another record set this summer.

A record temperature of 38.7C was recorded in Cambridge on Thursday, July 25 - the hottest temperature ever recorded in the UK.

Now, this bank holiday could be the hottest summer bank holiday in the UK.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have made it just 4/7 from 2/1 for the hottest summer bank holiday to be recorded this weekend.

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: “It’s been a month of coats and brollies so far but we’re strapping ourselves in for a record-breaking end to August.”

“Our traders expect the airport to reach highs of 31.5C.

“London Gatwick will be playing catch up but looks set to hit highs of 29C over the long weekend, while Cardiff and Manchester will be close in comparison at 26.5C.”
