Death in Paradise: Will receives a call from the police

After the shock announcement from DI Jack Mooney actor Ardal O’Hanlon earlier this year, fans will see actor Ralf Little taking over as Detective Neville Parker. He will be the new guy in town, leading the investigations on the beautiful island of Saint Marie but it is unclear when exactly he will join in the new series. But who has been the most popular detective on ? Have your say in the Express.co.uk poll.

Who is your favourite Death in Paradise detective?

Detective Richard Poole - Richard Miller

The first to step onto the sandy beaches was actor Ben Miller.

His character Detective Poole was a British police officer assigned to the Caribbean island of Saint Marie to investigate the murder of the previous inspector Charlie Hulme (Hugo Speer).

After solving the case, he was offered a permanent position as the island’s detective so decided to stay, despite his dislike for the tropical weather.

Despite his grumpy demeanour, as the series went on, he started warming to his team more and had a way of making deductive leaps with minimal information to help him solve cases.

However, Detective Poole met his end in series three when he was stabbed in the heart with an ice pick to stop him from revealing a case of identity theft during a reunion with friends from his university.

Detective Humphrey Goodman - Kris Marshall

Following his sad departure from Saint Marie, Detective Goodman came on board to solve the case as well as Poole’s murder.

He did so with the help from clues left by Poole during his own investigation and Goodman commented the detective had “solved his own murder”.

Goodman was assigned to be the new detective and, unlike his predecessor, took to island life with ease, taking it as an exciting and unexpected adventure.

Although clumsy and forgetful, he had a knack at being able to solve murders instantly, looking at the meaning of small details.

But it was his time to leave in series six after realising he could not live without his love Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) who was living in London.

Detective Jack Mooney - Ardal O’Hanlon

Mooney originally worked for the Metropolitan Police until he started investigating a case with the team at Saint Marie in series six.

Goodman invited him and his daughter Siobhan (Grace Stone) to use his shack on the island while he stayed in London with Martha.

He went on to help sole a case and when Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) asked him to stay on in the role, Mooney asked his daughter for permission.

Although against the idea at first, she eventually gave him her blessing.

Mooney’s technique was to get people to relax so he can catch them off guard with his stories about his large family.

He also had a sweet tooth and was often seen sneaking a few sweets here and there in the middle of his investigations.

But he won’t be on the island for too much longer.
