Mohamed Salah could set unwanted Liverpool record against Southampton - this is how

MOHAMED SALAH will set an unwanted personal record at Liverpool unless he finds the net against Southampton on Saturday.

The man who netted a stunning 46 goals last term will have failed to score in four consecutive games should he fail to score against the Saints at Anfield.

Salah has never gone more than three matches without slotting for the Reds, who are currently joint top of the Premier League standings after winning all five of their opening matches.

The last time Salah failed to score in three consecutive matches was at the back end of 2016. Having netted a hat-trick in Roma’s 3-0 win against Bologna on November 6, Salah was not on target again until Egypt’s African Cup of Nations win against Ghana on January 25.

While so often the main man last season, Salah has scored just two of Liverpool’s 14 goals so far this campaign.

Having scored in victories against West Ham and Brighton, the Reds forward has failed to net in recent outings against Leicester, Tottenham and PSG.

But the striker scored in both of last season’s Premier League clashes against the south coast opponents, and will look to repeat his sequence of goals following similar spells last term.

Salah scored twice against NK Maribor and once against Brighton last term, having not hit the back of the net in the three prior matches.

And Salah has received the backing of manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the clash.

Salah needed time last year... And he will take time this season as well

Jurgen Klopp

“Of course everybody expects [the same Mo Salah as last year],” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference this afternoon.

“But we don’t. What did he get [in his first six games] last season? Three. And two in six this season? Wow, that’s a crisis.

“He needed time last year, like we all needed time. And he will take time this season as well.

“On a defensive side, his last two games were outstanding. He’s ready to work for the team in these moments. He’s still a threat in offensive situations. Finishing is something you can never take for granted.”

The Egyptian was recruited in the summer of 2017 and made an instant impact on Merseyside, ending last season as the PFA Players' Player of the Year, the Football Writers' Player of the Year, and the PFA Fans' Player of the Year awards.

He was also named in the 2017–18 PFA Team of the Year.
