Henderson has had a disrupted season after a late return from the World Cup then a hamstring strain in October.

The midfielder played in England’s 3-0 win over the USA on Thursday and was expected to start today’s match at Wembley.

But the 28-year-old was omitted from the England squad with Fabian Delph starting alongside Eric Dier.

And England boss Southgate says he was unwilling to take a risk with Henderson.

"Jordan has been carrying a bit of an injury," said Southgate.

“He had some game time the other night but wasn't fully happy with it.

"He's somebody who always wants to play and in the end I had to take a decision.

“In these games you've got to be clear in your mind and perfectly happy."

After the international break, Liverpool visit Watford before a crucial Champions League clash away to Paris Saint Germain.

The Reds then play Everton in the Merseyside derby on December 2.

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has set his sights on returning as soon as possible after suffering knee ligament damage in April.

He told BetVictor: “I’d love to be able to make an appearance at least before the end of the season, depending on what we’re doing and if I’m really needed.

“I’m sure I’m not going to be; even when I’m back I won’t be fully up to scratch.

“It would be nice to get a few appearances before the end of the season, probably more mentally to prove I can do it.

“Then have a good pre-season and start fresh next season.

“But I know if I manage to get back on the pitch I won’t be thinking, ‘It’s just nice to be out here.’

“I’ll want to do well, score and try to help the boys win.

“If I’m needed for any emergencies, I’m going to have to pull out some good performances!”
