Man Utd news: Memphis Depay flopped at Manchester United for ONE reason

MEMPHIS DEPAY struggled at Manchester United because he didn’t feel at home at Old Trafford.

That is the view of former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Depay was a big money signing for Manchester United in 2015 but he failed to produce his best form in his 18 months at the club.

And in January 2017, Depay was sold to Ligue 1 side Lyon for around £16million.

However, since moving to France, Depay has rediscovered the form which made him one of the most sought-after players in football.

This year, Depay has had a role in 41 goals in 52 games for club and country with 23 goals and 18 assists.

And on Friday, he starred for the Netherlands as he tormented France in a 2-0 UEFA Nations League win.

Some reports have suggested United could look to trigger the buy-back clause they inserted in the deal when they sold the forward.

When discussing the form of Depay, Robinson said the attacker’s struggles at United stemmed from failing to settle.

“At Manchester United he looked a bit of a lost soul, it wasn’t his home,” Robinson said on beIN Sports.

“He’s playing with a little less pressure on him at Lyon, he’s playing with a bit more freedom and happiness.

“And he is the key man for the Dutch and leads the line, and is enjoying being the main man.

“To take the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford, it was a big statement.

“He didn’t settle. It wasn’t for him and he seems to have found a home at Lyon.”

But former Netherlands Under-21s coach Cor Pot feels Depay moved to United too early in his career.

"I found Memphis especially a very positive boy,” Pot told Voetbalprimeur.

"You already saw that it was a very great talent, maybe he went to Manchester United a bit too early, and that was all too fast. He was just a basic player in Eindhoven, Lyon was a good step for Memphis. It's fantastic now.

"He keeps on developing himself - not only as a player, but also as a person - Memphis gets a bit calmer, does not do any crazy things anymore, but at the time he was a bit shy.

"Of course you had that fuss with that extravagant behaviour. That seems a bit over now, I think he's doing fine."
