Liverpool decide stance on Nabil Fekir transfer amid claims Lyon deal will be revived

LIVERPOOL have no interest in reviving a deal for Lyon’s Nabil Fekir this summer.

That’s according to reports from Press Association Sport.

Liverpool were on the verge of signing Lyon captain Fekir 12 months ago, only for a deal to collapse at the eleventh hour.

The Reds had flown medical staff to Paris to complete a medical at the France national team’s Clairefontaine base on the eve of the World Cup.

And while Fekir had even gone as far to conduct interviews with Liverpool’s official media and pose in a club shirt, the Merseyside club pulled the plug amid fears over a knee injury the player had suffered back in 2015.

The 25-year-old missed near a full season with the problem and it has been claimed the surgery the player had to repair the injury did not satisfy Liverpool and sparked concerns there is a significant chance of re-injury later in his career.

But with Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas having publicly admitted there is an agreement in place for Fekir to leave Les Gones this summer, Liverpool have tipped to resurrect their interest in the attacker.

The Frenchman, capped 21 times by his country, has just one year left on his contract in the Rhone Valley and Lyon are keen to recoup a sizeable fee for the skipper.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, of La Gazzetta dello Sport, even claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s side had offered a five-year contract worth €4million (£3.5m) to the player.

But PA Sport insists Liverpool will not be going back in for the player, having not returned to negotiations with Lyon since backing out of a deal last year.

They claim that Fekir failed his medical, after which Liverpool sought a second medical opinion, and are unwilling to go back in for the player although he played the full 2018-19 season without any serious fitness issues.

Despite Fekir’s contractual situation, Ligue 1 outfit Lyon are understood to be pushing for a fee of around £45m.

It is suggested that Lyon are looking to kickstart an auction for Fekir and hinted that therefore, any interest in the player could be fabricated to help them tempt any other clubs into pushing for a deal.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol meanwhile thinks that the club should cash in on Dejan Lovren if they receive a £25m bid from AC Milan.

Dejan Lovren: Pundit predicts how much player is worth

The Serie A side have been linked with an approach for the Croatian centre-back, who is behind Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez in the pecking order at Anfield.

“Yes he’s worth £25m, yeah, absolutely,” Nicol told ESPN FC when asked about Lovren’s value.

“No [I would not keep him]. You have Gomez, you have Matip. Lovren’s been a good servant to Liverpool.

“Just because on occasions he’s made horrendous mistakes and we’ve picked him up on it, it doesn’t meant that I don’t like the guy.

“The guy’s got a big heart and he’s given everything for Liverpool. He’s played well on occasions.

“He gives you everything, sometimes to the detriment of his performance because he’s so eager and so keen to do well that he throws himself into challenges when he shouldn’t.”
