Ed Woodward talks Man Utd plans

Ed Woodward insists Manchester United have a clear transfer plan going forward.

"We have a clear vision in terms of football philosophy and recruitment," Woodward said.

"The significant investments that we have made in recent years in areas such as transfers, recruitment infrastructure, analytics and our Academy are already beginning to bear fruit.

"We are very proud to be shortly approaching a milestone 4,000th game featuring an Academy player, and we are particularly optimistic regarding the considerable young talent currently coming through.

"Our ultimate goal is to win trophies by playing exciting football with a team that fuses graduates from our Academy with world-class acquisitions.”

Jose Mourinho was sent Romelu Lukaku warning

Jose Mourinho was warned about Romelu Lukaku before he signed him for Manchester United.

Steve Walsh told The Athletic: “When Jose signed Romelu Lukaku from Everton, I remember saying to him, ‘You have to be careful with Lukaku. He is a big baby, you know.’

“He said he could handle him. I don’t think he really got Lukaku on-side mentally, which you have to do.

“That is the case with him and Paul Pogba. They aren’t my type of players. They are more about themselves than the team.

“I wouldn’t have touched them. Because they are good players doesn’t mean you are going to get a good team out of it.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka mistake

Manchester United should have signed Kieran Trippier instead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Steve Walsh claims.

“United have made a lot of signings,” Walsh told The Athletic. “Look at £50 million for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

“Now, perhaps it is too early and he will improve, but my eyes tell me when he gets the ball he is not the best.

“He is a good athlete and very quick, strong, and a good defender, but United don’t need a good defender, they need someone who can play, get on the ball.

“If I had been at United, I would have said, ‘Put your £50 million away, go and get Kieran Trippier for half that.

“He is an England international. He isn’t a great defender or a physical specimen, but he can play right-back and get the ball in early and you have strikers who can score goals.’

“It is common sense.”

Paul Pogba update

United have the upper hand regarding Paul Pogba’s future, despite knowing the Frenchman wants to leave, France football expert Julien Laurens claims.

“I don’t think so,” he said on ESPN FC when asked if there was a strong chance of Pogba leaving.

“He still has another 18 months left on his contract, and then another year that the club can trigger - and only the club.

“Basically, [he has] two and a half years more on his deal.

“United feel in a very comfortable position, which you can understand. They know Pogba wanted to leave in the summer, they know he still wants to go.

“He’s had a rough season so far with all those injuries, and until recently he’s had his whole foot in a cast. Things haven’t been great for him this season.

“For United, it’s the case of not wanting to sell him.

“If Juventus want to bring him back, they can always make an offer. Can they afford him with his transfer fee and wages, especially after the last two years and all the investment, the huge squad they have, I’m not so sure.

“But I can see why for Cristiano and Juventus, it would make sense to try and bring Pogba back where he had so many successful years.”

Real Madrid swap deal

Manchester United could sign Gareth Bale in January.

The Sun say Real Madrid are convinced the Wales international will complete a transfer to Old Trafford.

Real want to use Bale in a swap deal to land Paul Pogba next year.

The Sun add that if a deal cannot be agreed in January, it will most likely happen in the summer.

Top four prediction

United and Arsenal will both struggle to make it into the top four this season, according to Harry Redknapp.

“Tottenham have it all on now to get in the top four this year,” he told The Sun.

“The only thing now in their favour is that Arsenal look so poor.

“Chelsea are doing great, they’re going to be challenging. Leicester are going to be bang in there.

“But you’re looking at Arsenal — and Manchester United — and wondering if they are going to make it this year.

“I can see both of those two not making the top four unless there is a big improvement.

”It’s been a disappointing season so far for Spurs.

“I really thought they would be close to Manchester City and Liverpool and challenging.

“It’s difficult. The players haven’t hit the form they did last year. I’m a big fan of the manager and hopefully they can turn it around.”
