Why Manchester United could beat Barcelona and Bayern Munich to Kai Havertz transfer

Shaka Hislop reckons Manchester United are in a better position than Barcelona and Bayern Munich to sign Kai Havertz.

Kai Havertz shows off skills for Bayer Leverkusen

Manchester United could realistically sign Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz in January, according to Shaka Hislop. The Red Devils are apparently at the front of the queue to capture the 20-year-old attacking midfielder.

German publication Bild claimed earlier this week that Ed Woodward was interested in taking Havertz to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be heavily backed in the next transfer window as he bid to bolster his attacking ranks.

And former Premier League goalkeeper Hislop has tipped United to beat off competition from some of Europe’s heavyweights to snap up Havertz.

“Yes, Manchester United is an option, and I think he slots in well,” Hislop told ESPN FC.

“The big question here is the price and who else is interested.

“Manchester United have money to spend and have the greatest motivations about the clubs, over the Barcas and the Bayerns, who have been linked with Havertz.

“I don’t think they would stump up as much money and their need is not as great as Manchester United’s.”

It is no secret United are in the market for midfielders and Bild claim Leverkusen will hold out for an inflated £81million fee.

That could be a major stumbling block, especially if there are cheaper alternatives available, such as Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen or James Maddison, of Leicester.

Havertz found the net 17 times in his breakthrough season and has registered two goals and one assist this campaign.

However, he refused to be drawn on his future when asked of the links away from the Bundesliga earlier this week.

“To be honest, I have zero interest in that at the moment, because there are simply too many important matches to play," Havertz said.

“Like I've often said, I'll take care of it if the opportunity arises.”

Havertz is under contract until 2022 and Leverkusen bosses are keen to keep hold of their prized asset.

Team manager Simon Rolfes has recently claimed it is “unthinkable” that the German will leave next month.

Executive director Fernando Carro also insisted he will drive a hard deal if any clubs come sniffing.

“Atletico Madrid paid €126million to sign Joao Felix, and I certainly don't think he's better than Kai Havertz," Carro told Rheinische Post.

"We can't offer him the same as other clubs can. Given the duration of his contract, we have to expect him to leave either this summer or the summer after that.”
