Wolverhampton headteacher suspended
The headteacher of a Wolverhampton secondary school has been suspended, the Express & Star understands.
David Lewis has been suspended by St Peter's Collegiate School in Compton and an investigation launched.
The reason for the head's suspension has not been made clear. The Diocese of Lichfield, which runs the school, said Mr Lewis was "away from school" and that "extra support" had been brought in during his absence.
A spokesman said: “The principal of St Peter’s is currently away from school. To ensure the smooth running of the school and to maintain the high quality of education at St Peter’s, additional leadership support and expertise has been provided.
"As always, the education and wellbeing of students remains our priority.”
The diocese said it would not be commenting further on the matter at this stage. The Church of England Academy has been based in the city since the mid-19th century. St Peter's was rated as good by Ofsted at its last inspection in September 2017.
Councillor Wendy Thompson, leader of the Conservative group in Wolverhampton, called for a full investigation and said she hoped the matter could be cleared up as quickly as possible.
She said: "It is concerning to hear about the suspension and it will be concerning for parents.
"I'm sure everybody would like this to be cleared up as quickly as possible and I hope the school will be able to carry on as normal at this difficult time."
Mr Lewis took over as principal three years ago. In a message on the school's website he said he had been "thrilled" by recent progress.
He said: "We strive to ensure that every student is encouraged to unlock their God-given potential and are delighted that you have chosen S. Peter’s for your child’s secondary education.
"I am thrilled that our recent successful Ofsted and SIAMS reports confirm the significant progress at S. Peter’s over the past 12 months. The plan to refurbish current accommodation along with substantial new buildings will ensure S. Peter’s will flourish and grow to provide an excellent education in a Christian environment, for the foreseeable future."
