Police said they were called to deal with 'large-scale disorder' at Wolverhampton Academy, formerly known as the Starworks Warehouse, where 2,000 people turned up for an event featuring rap chart-toppers So Solid Crew.

But the ticket-only gig descended into chaos on Saturday night when security staff were overwhelmed by the number of people trying to get in without tickets.

Bosses decided to cancel the show for safety reasons as not everyone who had entered had been screened.

The decision to cancel did not go down well with the hundreds queued up outside the venue and led to disorder, police said.

It is the latest event at the former Starworks to be marred by chaos after show featuring Paul Gascoigne descended into farce when the football legend left part way through the evening amid claims he hadn't been paid.

Assist

Saturday night's show, Harmony & Ascension, was set to feature more than 60 artists including fire-eaters, stilt-walkers and acrobats.

The rave, hyped as 'the biggest line up to hit the Midlands in years ' was organised by London Boy Promotions.

The biggest name on the bill was So Solid Crew, who enjoyed chart success in the early noughties.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "Police were called to assist the security team at Starworks Warehouse, Frederick Street Wolverhampton at 12.40am on Sunday.

"An estimated 2,000 people had turned up at the venue and some had entered the building without going through security checks.

"A decision was taken by the venue to cancel the event, which resulted in confusion and some disorder among the people outside. The security team called police to protect the safety of the crowd.

"Local police will be seeking to work with Starworks Warehouse to ensure the safe running of events in future."
