The clothing store opened in the old New Look unit in the Mander Centre last month and has seen impressive sales in the first few weeks.

The news is a boost for shopping centre bosses, who are still reeling from the announcement anchor store Debenhams is set to close.

Centre manager Richard Scharenguivel said: “Matalan is a fantastic brand and a strong success story in a competitive retail market and we are delighted to welcome them to The Mander Centre.

“There were queues before opening and it’s been hugely popular and feedback from customers has been very positive.

“We will be supporting Matalan as much as we can in the coming months to maintain momentum and we are looking forward to B&M and Wilko opening in the autumn to complete an impressive quartet of new quality lettings.”

Councillor Harman Banger, cabinet member for city economy, at Wolverhampton Council, said: “This is great news for Matalan and the Mander Centre and very encouraging for the future.

“A vibrant retail offer is a key part of our city centre economy. We want to be a destination of choice and with over £1 billion investment on site or planned in our city centre alone, we’re making great progress.

“Delivering this means re-imagining and future-proofing our city centre with major investment in great connectivity, great public spaces, great new homes, great new jobs, a great leisure, cultural and sporting offer, great city events and of course a great retail offer - all of which will hugely benefit local families and businesses.”
