Wyton is relishing Worcester challenge

Andy Wyton claims Lye Town will head to Worcester City tomorrow confident of claiming a scalp as their Midlands League Premier campaign finally resumes, writes Matt Maher.

The game at Bromsgrove’s Victoria Ground, where Worcester currently play, will be Lye’s first in the league for three weeks.

Wyton has a full squad to choose from for the clash against a club who remain, despite their lowly position, among the biggest names in Midlands non-league football.

He said: “They might not be the Worcester of old but they are still a scalp. This is the first time I’ve ever faced them as a manager.

“They are a good side, third in the league and currently seven unbeaten. But we are confident of going there and getting a result.

“We’ve got big ambitions of our own and if we want to fulfil them this is the kind of game we need to be getting something from.”

Despite currently ground-sharing with Bromsgrove Sporting, Worcester still pull in the division’s biggest crowds with attendances regularly topping 300.

Wyton believes Lye, who sit seventh in the table just four points behind the hosts, can use that to their advantage.

“All the pressure is on them,” he said. “If we can make a good start to the game then hopefully we can get the crowd to turn on them.

“It’s a chance for us to show what we can do.”

Wyton continued: “Overall, we have to be pleased with the start to the season, particularly as all seven of our league games so far have been away from home.

“To pick up 14 points is a pretty good return. Now we want to kick on.

“There’s no real expectation on us. The only pressure is what we put on ourselves.”

Elsewhere, Walsall Wood host another of the promotion contenders when they take on Coventry United.

Sporting Khalsa will, meanwhile, aim to pile on the misery for bottom-of-the table South Normanton Athletic. The visitors arrive at the Aspray Arena having lost all eight of their games to date.

AFC Wulfrunians, who sit 11th in the table, go to 15th-placed Long Eaton United, while Stourport Swifts visit Dunkirk.
