Former Truro City striker Cody Cooke is to leave Scottish Premiership club St Mirren.

The Cornishman, 27, is one of six St Mirren players to be retained by the club under the furlough scheme before leaving the club.

Cooke, 27, signed for the Buddies in July 2018 after impressing in the V9 Academy, run by Leicester City and England footballer Jamie Vardy and set up to showcase non-league talent.

He made his professional football debut for St Mirren on July 13 in the Scottish League Cup and went on to make 27 appearances for the Buddies in all, scoring five times.

His most notable game came on the final day of the 2018/19 season when he came off the bench to score a hat-trick to rescue a 3-2 win at Dundee.

Cooke’s second and final season at the club was hampered by a knee ligament injury early in the campaign but managed to make ten appearances.

The Truro-born player enjoyed a successful seven-year spell with Truro City between 2011 and 2018 after joining from Penryn Athletic, playing a part in the club’s promotion to the Conference South in 2015.

He also featured in the White Tigers’ 3-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic in their first-ever appearance in the FA Cup first round proper.

Cooke posted a short statement on Twitter after the announcement was made, saying: “Eventful, yet unforgettable couple of years in Paisley, with some memories which I’ll carry very proudly with me forever.

“Thank you to everyone for their kind words and well wishes, the support and backing from everybody from day one has been immense.

“However, I’m now really looking forward to the next challenge, and really excited by the next chapter in my career, wherever that takes me.”

Cooke also praised the club for looking after all players during the current situation and wished everyone at the club well for the future.

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin told the club’s website: "It has been really difficult to have to say goodbye to these players especially in the current circumstances.

"However, the opportunity to support the players through the close season is one the club felt was important.

"It goes without saying that everyone at the club wishes all of them the very best for the future."
