Federal Bureau of Investigation Oklahoma City Field Office's Statement Regarding Cases Affected by the Supreme Court’s Ruling in McGirt V. Oklahoma

"As a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt decision, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Oklahoma City Field Office has assumed responsibility as an investigating agency in a number of cases within the territorial boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. The FBI is doing so in cooperation with our tribal, state, local, and federal law enforcement partners. In keeping with Department of Justice policy, the FBI does not comment on pending investigations. The decision under McGirt v. Oklahoma ruled that land reserved for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation since the 19th century remains a Native American reservation, announced on Thursday, July 9, 2020. This has resulted in the FBI becoming a responsible law enforcement agency for offenses committed in that area, including Major Crimes Act violations, when a Native American is involved. While this increases the FBI’s role to investigate specific criminal matters within the territorial boundaries of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, we remain committed to ensuring public safety and security for all Oklahomans with our tribal, state, local, and federal law enforcement partners."
