As we traverse across the country, you’ll see brides from different parts wearing different types of jewellery that make them look distinctively different. Here’s looking at the traditional bridal jewellery from the state of Tamil Nadu. Remember Deepika Padukone from Chennai Express?
Jadanagam: This is the hair jewellery that is used over the braid. The name literally translates to hair snake as it is long like a snake and worn over the hair.
Thalaisamaan: This is the full head jewellery set. It comprises of a maatha patti that is worn across the hairline, and the centre parting of the hair. There is a centre round pendant atop the forehead. There are two hair brooches in the set, one shaped like the sun, and the other the moon. The Iyer brides wear netri chutti as the maatha patti and the Gounder brides wear netri patti. The Chettiyar bride has a maatha patti with a design in between the two.
Jhimki: These are the earrings. They come in different designs and styles.
Nose ring or stud: This is either a round nose ring worn or a stud. It is made wholly of gold by some, while other wear nose studs of either one stone, or multiple ones.
Layered neckpieces: The Tamil bride wears many neckpieces layered. These can include Kilikasu Haram, Kempu Attigai, Lakshmi Haram, and Varakkai Haram. Or Lakshmi Naga Malai, Siggapu Kal Attigal, and Kasu Malai. Or Mulla Muttu Maalai, Netti Chutti, Manga Malai, and Lakshmi Haram.
Vanki: This is the inverted U-shaped arm band with an intricate design in the centre.
Valayal: These are heavy gold bangles.
Ungila: These are the gold rings worn in the fingers.
Ottiyanam: This is worn over the hips like a sari belt. This is made of silver or gold.
Anklet: Anklets are worn by the bride in myriad designs and shapes.
Metti: These are the toe rings, worn in the second or third toe finger. They’re mostly made of silver and have two or three rounds.
