Given how successful Kerala state has been in containing the coronavirus, the new district collector of Thiruvananthapuram Navjot Khosa will continue the focus on strategies of curbing its spread after the lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Khosa, who started her career public administration as an assistant collector in Thrissur, took over as the new post this week, from her immediate predecessor K Gopalakrishnan. Her primary goal is to strategically deal with the possibilities of cases coming in from those migrating back to the state as well as the rise after the lockdown. The second focus will be on the monsoon, should it go untoward, and the spread of infectious diseases like dengue and leptospirosis.

After conducting a meeting with the team members upon joining, Khosa told a national daily that they are prepared, but they can’t be complacent. She also said that all health department issued instructions will be followed, and that home quarantine is appropriately implemented.

On the second pertinent issue, the new officer said that measures to control floods are being taken, since her district is among the highest recipients of rain every year. Although she has been informed that most of the preparatory work is done, she will be holding a meeting with all personnel involved in the monsoon plan to evaluate the situation and chart the course ahead. Time permitting, she intends to visit the coastal areas to assess the situation.

The former sub-collector in Thalassery and then the food safety commissioner who is a native of Punjab and an officer of the 2012 batch, said this opportunity to lead a district was “a dream come true”. She said the time to take over a post is never perfect, and an officer has to be prepared at all given times.

Khosa, who is originally from Punjab, has also held the posts of managing director of the Medical Services Corporation and the National Ayush Mission, Kerala, before this.
