The Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday appointed IAS officer Nilam Sawhney as Chief Secretary of the State. A 1984 batch IAS officer of Andhra cadre, Sawhney was on deputation at the Centre as Social Justice and Empowerment Secretary. She succeeded Neerab Kumar.

As per an official statement Sawhney said: "I am happy to be back in Andhra Pradesh. I started my career in Machilipatnam, the headquarters of Krishna district, way back in early eighties and now I am back to do my bit for the development of the State under the direction of the Chief Minister."

She has become the first woman chief secretary of bifurcated Andhra Pradesh. Her husband Ajay Sawhney is also an IAS officer and is currently serving as secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

The State government recently removed senior IAS officer LV Subrahmanyam as Chief Secretary. Subrahmanyam's exit, was controversial as it had come after a spat with another senior bureaucrat, Praveen Prakash, presently serving as the Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.
