Highlights, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Match, Full cricket score: Mashrafe Mortaza and Co win by 62 runs
11:08 PM (IST)

Bangladesh stay alive in the World Cup with a big win over Afghanistan! And the credit for the win largely belongs to Shakib Al Hasan. Others also pitched in with runs and wicket, especially Msuhfiqur Rahim’s 83 helped Bangladesh reach 262 on a difficult pitch batting first. But Shakib will dominate the headlines tomorrow. He continued his good form with the bat as he scored 51 and then returned to take five wickets. Second player to do so in a World Cup match after Yuvraj Singh.

We have a great game coming up tomorrow. England will face arch-rivals Australia. So, it’s time for us to leave. Good night!

11:01 PM (IST)

Mortaza: The crowd has been fantastic. He (Shakib) has been fantastic throughout the tournament. He has been phenomenal. The partnership between Mushy and Shakib was important, as the track wasn’t easy to bat on. Tamim batted well in the top order. We still have a week’s time so hopefully he (Mahmudullah) will be fit by then.

10:59 PM (IST)

Gulabdin Naib, Afghanistan captain: Today we were not good in the field and we gave away 30-40 runs. The wicket was slow but got easy to bat on in second innings. But all the credit to Shakib. The plan to send Ikram ahead of Najibullah was to keep the scoreboard ticking. We wanted to hold him back because he is a good hitter. We have done a lot of good things in the tournament. To do well in such a tournament, you need to prepare well.

10:52 PM (IST)

Shakib: It’s been great throughout this World Cup. We started well so the fans have been behind us. I think the five wickets gave me more pleasure. I had to work really hard for the fifty. Mushfiq played an important knock, without him we wouldn’t have got to 262. We knew it was going to be tough with their three spinners, so it needed a team effort. I did work really hard before the tournament, I was well prepared.

10:50 PM (IST)

Shakib Al Hasan is the Man of the Match for his knock of 51 and bowling figures of 5/29

10:48 PM (IST)

A comfortable victory for Bangladesh. They live to fight for another day. Currently they have climbed to the fifth position at the point’s table thanks to this ‘Shakib’s special’.

10:44 PM (IST)

Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 62 runs!

OUT! Mujeeb b Saifuddin 0(4)

Saifuddin completes the formality by rattling the stumps of Mujeeb. Afghanistan has been bowled out for 200. Bangladesh stay alive in the tournament.

After 47 overs,Afghanistan 200/10 ( Samiullah Shinwari 49 , )

10:41 PM (IST)

FOUR! Shinwari drilled the fuller delivery down the ground. Shakib put in a dive but failed to cut off the boundary

10:39 PM (IST)

After 46 overs,Afghanistan 195/9 ( Samiullah Shinwari 44 , Mujeeb Ur Rahman 0)

Mustafizur rolled his fingers on the ball for another cutter and the extra bounce surprised Zadran as the faint edge was taken by the keeper. Bangladesh one wicket away from a win. 68 more needed in last four overs.

10:37 PM (IST)

OUT! Dawlat Zadran c Rahim b Mustafizur 0(8)

Another wicket for the Fizz! A bit of a late appeal by Bangladesh players but there was a slight nick and Zadran has been given out. It was another cutter from the bowler and the extra bounce surprised Zadran as it took the edge to the keeper.

10:34 PM (IST)

After 45 overs,Afghanistan 194/8 ( Samiullah Shinwari 43 , Dawlat Zadran 0)

Three from the over and Shakib is done for the day and what an outing it has been for Bangladesh’s super hero. He finishes with figures of 10-1-29-5. 69 in 30 required.

10:34 PM (IST)

Shakib Al Hasan becomes the first Bangladeshi bowler to take a five-wicket haul in World Cup. He also becomes the second cricketer overall after Yuvraj Singh to score a fifty and take a five-for (In 50-over World Cup) in a World Cup match.

What a champion Shakib has been for Bangladesh!

10:33 PM (IST)

10:32 PM (IST)

After 44 overs,Afghanistan 191/8 ( Samiullah Shinwari 40 , Dawlat Zadran 0)

Bangladesh are now just two wickets away from a win. Mustafizur got the wicket of Rashid Khan immediately after his return to the attack. He played his pull shot straight to mid-on fielder. He was deceived by the lack of pace. Dawlat Zadran is the new batsman. 72 in 36 needed.

10:27 PM (IST)

OUT! Rashid Khan c Mortaza b Mustafizur 2(3)

The fight is almost over! Rashid was expected to chip in with some runs but he placed Mustafizur’s cutter into the hands of the mid-off fielder, trying to pull from close to the body.

10:25 PM (IST)

After 43 overs,Afghanistan 189/7 ( Samiullah Shinwari 39 , Rashid Khan 1)

Five-wicket haul for Shakib and he has helped Bangladesh break the dangerous partnership. Najibullah failed to connect to the outside off tossed up delivery after sauntering out and Mushfiqur whipped off the bails. Shakib is the first player after Yuvraj Singh in 2011 to score a fifty and take a five-for in a World Cup match. 74 in 42 needed.

10:24 PM (IST)

Players with 50-plus runs and a five-wicket haul in an ODI World Cup match:

Yuvraj Singh v Ireland, Bangalore, 2011
Shakib Al Hasan v Afghanistan, Southampton, 2019*

10:23 PM (IST)

OUT! Najibullah st Rahim b Shakib 23(23)

Five-wicket haul for Shakib! Floated the ball outside off as Najibullah charged down for a lofted shot but failed to make the connect and Mushfiqur disturbed the stumps.

10:18 PM (IST)

Samiullah Shinwari has an excellent record against Bangladesh and Najibullah Zadran has had a decent World Cup with the bat. Also there is Rashid to come. So, I am sure Mortaza and company hasn’t become complacent yet. Shakib’s overs will be the be the key.

10:18 PM (IST)

After 42 overs,Afghanistan 184/6 ( Samiullah Shinwari 36 , Najibullah Zadran 22)

Fifty partnership up for Shinwari and Najibullah and it has come in good time, just 39 deliveries. Seven off this over. 79 in 48 needed.

10:14 PM (IST)

After 41 overs,Bangladesh 200/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 64 , Mahmudullah 22)

Shakib’s figures has taken some beating in this over with 11 of it. Shinwari finished the over with a maximum. Used his fast hands to hit through the line as the last ball went over long-off. 86 in 54 required.

10:12 PM (IST)

SIX! Brutal shot! Tossed up delivery by Shkaib has been blasted over long-off by Shinwari for a maximum

10:09 PM (IST)

After 40 overs,Afghanistan 166/6 ( Samiullah Shinwari 27 , Najibullah Zadran 13)

Mosaddek has been taken out of attack after just one over. Saifuddin given the ball for his sixth over. Six from it. We are now into the final powerplay. 97 needed in 60 balls.

10:06 PM (IST)

Asian players with 50-plus runs and 4-plus wickets in an ODI WC match:

Yuvraj Singh v Ireland, Bangalore, 2011
Tillakaratne Dilshan v Zimbabwe, Pallekele, 2011
Wahab Riaz v Zimbabwe, Brisbane, 2015
Shakib Al Hasan v Afghanistan, Southampton, 2019*

10:04 PM (IST)

After 39 overs,Afghanistan 160/6 ( Samiullah Shinwari 24 , Najibullah Zadran 11)

Four to start off the over as Shinwari crashed the outside off ball past backward point. Both batsmen are scoring at a good rate. 103 in 66 now required

FOUR! Short ball, outside off by Mustafizur and Shinwari slashes that to the fence past backward point

After 38 overs,Afghanistan 154/6 ( Samiullah Shinwari 19 , Najibullah Zadran 10)

Seven off the over as Mosaddek returns into attack. A glorious cover drive four for Najibullah as well who shimmied down to thrash the fuller delivery to the fence.

FOUR! Great flair in the shot. Najibullah sauntered out to get to the pitch of the ball and crashed it to deep extra cover

After 37 overs,Afghanistan 147/6 ( Samiullah Shinwari 17 , Najibullah Zadran 5)

Mustafizur continues. Six off the over. 116 more needed by Afghanistan and they have four wickets in hand but the required rate is almost 9.

After 36 overs,Afghanistan 141/6 ( Samiullah Shinwari 13 , Najibullah Zadran 4)

Eventful over with Ikram getting run out on first ball on return of Hasan to attack. There was an appeal for lbw against Shinwari as Ikram ran halfway down the ground. He was forced to return back with no single on offer as the direct hit from short mid caught him short of the crease. Ikram could have survived but he never stretched the arm to reach the crease. Two fours came later in the over. One for Shinwari and new batsman Najibullah Zadran, who looks positive from the start.

FOUR! Intent shown by Najibullah Zadran. He comes out of the crease to smash the ball over mid-off for a boundary

FOUR! Paddle sweep from Shenwari off Hasan to beat the short fine leg fielder to add a boundary

OUT! Ikram Ali Khil run out (Liton Das) 11 (12)

Amateur running by Ikram! He was forced to return after running halfway down the track as there was no single. A direct-hit from short mid-wicket caught him short of the crease but he could have survived with a stretch of arm.

Shakib Al Hasan becomes the first Bangladesh bowler with two four-wicket hauls in ICC ODI Cricket World Cup. His other four-fer came against New Zealand at Hamilton in 2015.

At this point, Bangladesh should go for the kill, purely from the Net Run Rate point of view. They have to keep this victory margin as big as possible. Time for Mortaza to attack with his best available options.

After 35 overs,Afghanistan 132/5 ( Samiullah Shinwari 8 , Ikram Ali Khil (W) 11)

Mustafizur Rahman is back into attack and the uncanny bowler is the right customer for this moment. Seven off the over including a four on last ball for Ali Khil. The outside edge ran past the keeper after the batsman opened the face of the bat late.

FOUR! Ali Khil opened the face of the bat late to guide the ball past the keeper to the third man fence

After 34 overs,Afghanistan 125/5 ( Samiullah Shinwari 7 , Ikram Ali Khil (W) 6)

Mortaza continues from the other end and that thing has not gone down well with the commentators. Afghanistan have two new batsmen and not attacking them right now is a poor decision. Seven from this over.

After 33 overs,Afghanistan 119/5 ( Samiullah Shinwari 6 , Ikram Ali Khil (W) 1)

What a day for Shakib. Scored a fifty in first innings, crossed 1000-run mark in World Cups and has now got four wickets in the match. Tossed up the ball to Asghar who placed his slog-sweep into the hands of deep square leg fielder. Can Shakib take a five-for? Let’s see. Ikram Ali Khil is the new batsman. Two off the over.

OUT! Asghar Afghan c (sub)Sabbir Rahman b Shakib 20(38)

Fourth wicket for Shakib! Asghar got hold of the slog-sweep shot but smashed it a little too well for his liking as it went straight to the fielder at deep square leg.

After 32 overs,Afghanistan 117/4 ( Asghar Afghan 20 , Samiullah Shinwari 5)

Mortaza brings himself back into the attack to replace Saifuddin. Four off the over including a double after a throw hits the wicket and runs for an over throw.

After 31 overs,Afghanistan 113/4 ( Asghar Afghan 17 , Samiullah Shinwari 4)

The wickets have put a temporary break on the run rate here and we are not surprised. Two off the over.

Shakib Al Hasan with the bat, Shakib Al Hasan with the ball – by far, the southpaw has been the most valuable player of this World Cup. Thanks to his all-round heroics, he has almost single-handedly kept Bangladesh’s semi-final hopes alive. By getting rid of Naib and Nabi in that over, Shakib has more or less secured two points for his team from this do or die fixture. Afghanistan batsmen seem to have no clue of how to tackle his left-arm spin.

After 30 overs,Afghanistan 111/4 ( Asghar Afghan 16 , Samiullah Shinwari 3)

Saifuddin completes his fifth over, giving away five runs including a leg bye. Asghar and Shinwari have a mountain to climb. Required rate is over 7.5.

50-plus runs and 2-plus wickets most times in an ODI World Cup match:

4 – Yuvraj Singh
4 – Shakib Al Hasan*

After 29 overs,Afghanistan 106/4 ( Asghar Afghan 13 , Samiullah Shinwari 2)

The game changing over. Shakib has kind of almost killed the Afghan chase with two big wickets in the same over. Got Naib caught at short cover, three short of his fifty, with a tossed up delivery on off and then clean bowled Nabi with an arm ball. Nabi was outfoxed into playing for spin leaving a gap between bat and pad. Samiullah Shinwari is the new batsman. Still, you should never say never and Afghans would try to give their best.

OUT! Nabi b Shakib 0(2)

Bowled and Nabi is gone for a duck. Shakib has changed the game in this over with two big wickets. It was an arm ball but Nabi was playing for turn. Got outfoxed as the ball hit the inside-edged and rattled the stumps.

OUT! Naib c Liton Das b Shakib 47(75)

The plan to have close-in fielders has worked for Bangladesh. Shakib fired in a tossed up delivery on off tempting Naib into a shot as he played his drive straight to the short cover fielder.

After 28 overs,Afghanistan 104/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 47 , Asghar Afghan 13)

Naib swipes the first ball to mid-on for a single. Another two singles on the leg side as three come from Saifuddin’s over.

After 27 overs,Afghanistan 101/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 45 , Asghar Afghan 12)

This is interesting. Liton Das has been placed as silly point for Asghar. Putting him under pressure. Forward defense is not an option, shots making required. Maiden over for Shakib.

After 26 overs,Afghanistan 101/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 45 , Asghar Afghan 12)

100 up for Afghanistan in the 26th over. Another bowling change. Saifuddin back into attack and starts off by giving away three runs. The required rate in 6.75 now.

After 25 overs,Afghanistan 98/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 44 , Asghar Afghan 10)

Shakib has been called into attack. This current partnership is worth 19 off 25 balls and Bangladesh have realised that they need a change. Also, Mahmudullah has been ruled out of fielding in this match because of the hamstring issue.

After 24 overs,Afghanistan 96/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 43 , Asghar Afghan 9)

Nine off the over as Afghans start adding some valuable runs. A boundary for Asghar with a sweep shot to a fuller flat delivery to square leg fence. 1000 ODI runs up for Naib.

Injury update: Mahmudullah will not take any further part in this match due to his calf muscle injury, which he sustained while batting.

FOUR! Full-blooded sweep by Asghar to the square leg boundary. Played it well to keep the ball all along the ground

After 23 overs,Afghanistan 87/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 41 , Asghar Afghan 2)

Good over for Afghans. Six off it. Naib added a boundary to move into 40s. He came out of his crease and chipped the shot over mid-off to score a four.

FOUR! Good shot by Naib. Shimmied out of the crease, stayed away from the ball and chipped it over mid-off for a boundary

After 22 overs,Afghanistan 81/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 36 , Asghar Afghan 1)

Hasan continues. And Naib could also have been a goner had the leading edge, as he attempted a flick, landed in the palms of a fielder but it fell in a safe area after lobbing over the bowler. Two off the over.

Just when Afghanistan were getting one partnership going, Mosadek strikes. A sigh of relief for the Bangladeshi contingent at the Rose Bowl. This wicket will increase the asking rate even further, which is already close to 6.5. Afghanistan have to take this run-chase as deep as possible. Towards the end there are the likes of Nabi and Rashid who can score quickly.

After 21 overs,Afghanistan 79/2 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 35 , Asghar Afghan 0)

Mosaddek Hossain has provided the second breakthrough and Shahidi’s misery with the bat is over. He was struggling to get runs. There was a mixup before the wickets as both batsmen were caught ball watching but Bangladesh failed to capitalise, however, the wicket came soon. Shahidi leaned forward to reach the pitch of the ball as the offspin pitched and turned away for the keeper to break the stumps. Asghar Afghan is the new batsman. Two off the over.

OUT! Shahidi st Rahim b Mosaddek Hossain 11(31)

Stumped! May be it was the pressure of lack of runs or may be it was the delivery from Mosaddek which beat the outside edge. Shahidi was reaching to the pitch of the ball, missed the ball as it turned away for the keeper to whip off the bails.

After 20 overs,Afghanistan 77/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 34 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 10)

Four singles off first four deliveries followed by two dot balls. Shahidi will be on strike in the next over. We reckon batters will try some shots soon.

After 19 overs,Afghanistan 73/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 32 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 8)

Naib nudges the first ball from Mosaddek to mid-wicket for a single followed by five dot balls. The required rate is now over 6.

After 18 overs,Afghanistan 72/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 31 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 8)

A misfield by substitute fielder Sabbir Rahman allows Shahidi to convert a double into triple after he broomed the fuller delivery from Hasan to fine leg. Seven off the over.

After 17 overs,Afghanistan 65/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 27 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 5)

We are back after the drinks and Mosaddek will continue bowling from this end. Five off the over. The run rate has fallen behind 4 now. Afghanistan need to wary that they don’t fall too much behind the required rate, else wickets in hand won’t also be able to help.

400-plus runs and more than five wickets in an edition of WC:

Scott Styris, 2007
Sanath Jayasuriya, 2007
Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2011
Shakib Al Hasan, 2019*

After 16 overs,Afghanistan 60/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 25 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 2)

Hasan continues. Two off the over. A single for Shahidi with a sweep shot while Naib retains the strike with another one on last ball. Naib is suffering from some cramps and drinks has been taken.

After 15 overs,Afghanistan 58/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 24 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 1)

Mosaddek Hossain brought into attack and Naib decides to pull things back. Dances down on the last ball to play his shot over mid-off for a four.

FOUR! Much-needed boundary for Afghanistan. Naib shimmies out to crash the shot over mid-off for a boundary

After 14 overs,Afghanistan 54/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 20 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 1)

Hasan continues. Three off the over. The offie finishes the over with a ripper as the tossed up ball kicks up sharply with turn but Shahidi did well to stay away from it.

After 13 overs,Afghanistan 51/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 18 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 0)

Shakib continues. Naib plays with the spin to guide the ball past backward point for a single as Afghanistan continue to move slowly.

Shakib strikes in his first over. Just what the doctor ordered for Bangladesh. Poor shot selection by Rahmat Shah. Ideally he should have anchored the innings whereas others could have played around him.

After 12 overs,Afghanistan 50/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 17 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 0)

Another bowling change, off-spinner Mehidy Hasan comes from another end. Twin spin attack on for Bangladesh now. Just one from this over. 50 up for Afghanistan.

After 11 overs,Afghanistan 49/1 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 16 , Hashmatullah Shahidi 0)

The opening partnership has been broken. One short of 50-run stand and Shakib is the perpetrator. Bowling change does the trick for Bangladesh. It’s foolish to attack Shakib on these pitches but Rahmat took up the challenge and went for a shot over mid-off. Shakib bowled a flatter one and the shot was miscued to the mid-on fielder. Hashmatullah Shahidi is the new batsman.

OUT! Rahmat c Tamim b Shakib 24(35)

The change of bowling has worked for Bangladesh. Shakib breaks the partnership. Rahmat wanted to take the spinner on who bowled in a flatter one as his lofted shot is taken by the mid-on fielder.

After 10 overs,Afghanistan 48/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 15 , Rahmat Shah 24)

Three off the over as Afghanistan finish first powerplay on 48/0. The current run rate is 4.8 while the required rate is 5.38.

After 9 overs,Afghanistan 45/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 12 , Rahmat Shah 24)

Expensive over. 12 off it and Afghanistan are off to a flying start. Rahmat as an opener is working well for the batting side. Two boundaries in the over for the right-hander. A pull shot to backward square leg fetched four runs while a slap on off added another boundary. Mortaza is surely not returning to attack soon.

FOUR! Rahmat sat back deep to cut the ball late through the gap past point on off for a boundary

FOUR! Slow short ball from Mortaza, sitting up on the batsman as Rahmat swiveled on his feet to pull it to backward square leg

After 8 overs,Afghanistan 33/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 9 , Rahmat Shah 15)

Bowling change. Mohammad Shaifuddin comes into attack to replace Mustafizur. Slow but an assured start for Afghanistan. Bangladesh need wickets. Two off the over.

After 7 overs,Afghanistan 31/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 8 , Rahmat Shah 14)

It’s hard to time the ball easily on this surface and that has forced the batters to come out to play their shots. A charge towards mid-wicket gets Rahmat a double. Four off the over.

After 6 overs,Afghanistan 27/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 8 , Rahmat Shah 10)

Excellent first delivery from Mustafizur. Cross-seamed delivery which moved away just a bit after pitching to square up Naib, beating his outside edge. Boundary to end the over as Naib plays an attacking straight drive. Six off the over.

Decent start by two makeshift openers of Afghanistan. So far so good. They need a solid start upfront to chase this total down. For Bangladesh, both Mortaza and Mustafizur are ideally suited bowlers on this surface. So, the Afghan openers need to hang in there and get the scoreboard ticking.

After 5 overs,Afghanistan 21/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 3 , Rahmat Shah 9)

An uppish flick over square leg fetches Naib a single on second ball. Just one from the one the over as Rahmat blocks the last four balls from Mortaza.

After 4 overs,Afghanistan 20/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 2 , Rahmat Shah 9)

Five off the over including a cracking pull shot by Rahmat to the mid-wicket as he picked the short ball early from Mustafizur to punish the pacer.

FOUR! First boundary of the match and it’s a cracking pull shot by Rahmat off Mustafizur to the mid-wicket

After 3 overs,Afghanistan 15/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 2 , Rahmat Shah 5)

Mortaza continues. Run out appeal on the first ball against Rahmat after a direct hit at bowler’s end but he was safely in. A cross seamer nipped back in sharply to cut Rahmat into half before he played a straight drive for a double on the last ball. Seven off the over.

After 2 overs,Afghanistan 8/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 0 , Rahmat Shah 2)

Big appeal for LBW on first ball against Gulbadin though the enthusiasm died down soon and Bangladesh opted against a review. Good decision as replays show it had pitched outside leg. Four dot balls from Mustafizur Rahman and the fifth one is dragged down leg for four leg byes.

Mashrafe Mortaza needs to take two more wickets to become the fourth captain with 100-plus wickets in ODIs after Wasim Akram, Shaun Pollock and Imran Khan.

The lowest total successfully defended by Bangladesh in an ODI World Cup match is 185/9 which they defended against Scotland at Edinburgh in 1999.

After 1 overs,Afghanistan 4/0 ( Gulbadin Naib (C) 0 , Rahmat Shah 2)

Safe start for Afghanistan. Four off the over including a wide and leg bye. Mortaza hasn’t been the most dangerous bowler in the powerplay lately and Afghanistan batters would look to score as much as possible in first 10 overs.

Time for the chase! Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah have come out to open Afghanistan’s innings. Mashrafe Mortaza to bowl the first over.

Bangladesh today:

First 35 overs : 161/4 (RR – 4.60)

Last 15 overs : 101/3 (RR – 6.73)

Not a bad finish by Afghan bowlers here. 69 runs in the last 10 overs. Though, throughout the innings, their fielding has been pathetic, which is a huge disappointment for this side in this World Cup.

However, I don’t think Bangladesh will be unhappy with 262. Remember, in the last match Virat Kohli said that 260 is a par score on this pitch and thanks to Mossadek’s quick-fire 24-ball 35, Bangladesh have managed to get there.

After 50 overs,Bangladesh 262/7 ( Mohammad Saifuddin 2 , )

Good end to the over as Naib finishes the innings with a wicket. He takes two wickets in his 10 overs, giving away 56 runs. Still, this a good score from Bangladesh. Played sensible cricket throughout the innings, without taking much risks. Afghanistan will find the chase tough.

Bowled!

Final ball of the innings and Naib gets the wicket of Hossain with a slow yorker. Mosaddek Hossain b Naib 35(24)

Slower one from Naib and Hossain smashes it past the covers fielders.

After 49 overs,Bangladesh 254/6 ( Mosaddek Hossain 29 , Mohammad Saifuddin 0)

The over started on a four but Dawlat makes amends by removing Rahim. He concedes eight runs in the over and in his nine overs, he went for 64 runs, picking up one wicket. Last over to go.

Most scores between 80 and 90 for Bangladesh in ODIs:

7 – Tamim Iqbal

5 – Mushfiqur Rahim*

4 – Soumya Sarkar

Rahim’s knock comes to an end!

Didn’t get the timing at all as he skies the ball and the catch is taken at covers. Out after playing a good knock on a tough surface. Rahim c Nabi b Dawlat Zadran 83(87)

Full-toss from Dawlat and Hossain smashes it over covers for a four.

After 48 overs,Bangladesh 246/5 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 83 , Mosaddek Hossain 21)

Rashid Khan goes for runs in his final over. Concedes two boundaries in his first three balls and gives away just two in the next three. His goes for 52 runs in his 10 overs, without taking a wicket.

Time for Mosaddek Hossain to find the boundary! Makes room and hits it over the covers fielder to get valuable four runs.

Clever from Rahim. Comes up with a reverse-sweep and connects it properly to find the boundary. Pressure on Rashid Khan.

After 47 overs,Bangladesh 236/5 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 78 , Mosaddek Hossain 16)

Pity Bangladesh didn’t take advantage of Hossain’s boundary in the very first ball of the over. Apart from a wide, they scored just one run from the rest of the remaining balls. They should’ve targetted Dawlat.

Short from Dawlat  and Hossain pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary. Poor ball to start a new over.

After 46 overs,Bangladesh 227/5 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 77 , Mosaddek Hossain 9)

Rashid Khan into the attack. Once again, Rahim and Hossain do well to find the gaps and pick up runs. Rahim comes up with a scoop in the final ball of the over. No pace in the shot to take it to the boundary but the batsman gets two.

Ok, time for a score prediction. The launching pad is ready for Bangladesh. Mushfiqur is set at the crease, Mossadek is also a good hitter down the order. So, I believe Bangladesh can get 275-280 here. And one must feel, on this pitch that will be enough.

After 45 overs,Bangladesh 220/5 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 75 , Mosaddek Hossain 4)

Mujeeb finishes his spell for today. He concedes just 39 runs from his 10 overs and picked up three wickets. Rahim and Hossain are picking gaps nicnely and their running between the wickets is really good. Still not trying for the big shots.

After 44 overs,Bangladesh 212/5 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 68 , Mosaddek Hossain 3)

Mosaddek Hossain is the new batsman. Rashid Khan is back on to bowl in the death overs. Almost picks up a wicket in the fifth ball. Bowls a terrific googly as the ball hits Hossain’s pads. The on-field umpire says no and the replays shows the ball just clipping the bails. It would’ve been umpire’s call. Gives away five runs.

Nuns are at the match!

After 43 overs,Bangladesh 207/5 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 66 , )

Naib gives away four singles from his first four balls. He ends the over on a strong note by picking the wicket of Mahmudullah. Intelligent bowling from the captain as change in pace does the trick for his team. One more over left for him in this innings.

Mahmudullah departs!

Looks to clear the mid-wicket boundary but doesn’t get any timing on a slower ball. Hands a simple catch to the mid-wicket fielder.

Bangladesh players with 11,000-plus runs in international cricket:

Tamim Iqbal

Shakib Al Hasan

Mushfiqur Rahim*

After 42 overs,Bangladesh 203/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 64 , Mahmudullah 25)

Nabi comes to the attack. Mahmudullah and Rahim bring up 50-run partnership with a double in the fourth ball. The first three ball goes for nothing while Nabi gives away a single in the fourth ball. He finishes his quota of overs.

After 41 overs,Bangladesh 200/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 64 , Mahmudullah 22)

To his credit, Naib comes back well after conceding a four in his first ball. He gives away just three runs from the remaining five balls to limit the damage. Afghanistan need to think in terms of taking wickets. The chase is not going to be easy.

Mahmudullah slices it towards point and gets the boundary. Solid timing!

After 40 overs,Bangladesh 193/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 62 , Mahmudullah 17)

Bangladesh are looking for runs. Nabi starts well but a beautiful boundary in the fourth ball from Mahmudullah spoils the over. This is a good score on a tough wicket and Bangladesh will look to the end their innings on a strong note.

Shot from Mahmudullah! Nabi pitches it up and the batsman hits it over he fielder at covers for a four.

After 39 overs,Bangladesh 186/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 61 , Mahmudullah 11)

Another bit of sloppy fielding from Afghanistan. Rahim completes a two but a wayward throw from the deep results in an extra run. Rashid ends the over conceding a boundary so he’s not happy with this spell. He gives away 11 runs in the over.

Another timely knock by Mushfiqur. He is showing his class and experience here. For Bangladesh his presence at the crease till the 47-48th over is crucial, if they want to get close to the 300-run mark. However, at the other end Mahmudullah is showing some discomfort with his hamstring. He is struggling to take the quick singles.

Good shot from Rahim. Just moves across the pitch with an intention to spoil the length of Rashid Khan. Goes for the sweep, and gets it is wide of the short fine leg fielder fence for four.

After 38 overs,Bangladesh 177/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 54 , Mahmudullah 9)

Mujeeb returns to action to bowl his ninth over. Apart from a wide down the leg-side, he concedes four singles in the over. Looks like Naib wants Mujeeb to finish his quota of overs. Not holding him back till the death overs.

After 37 overs,Bangladesh 172/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 52 , Mahmudullah 7)

Dawlat comes back good after conceding a six in the second ball of the over. Bit of variation in length in the last three balls as he gives away three singles apart from a six in the over. He went for 47 runs from his seven overs.

First six of the game!

Rahim charges down the ground to Dawlat and clears the long-on boundary. Pitches up and it’s in slot for Rahim. He probably thought it’s time to up the ante.

After 36 overs,Bangladesh 163/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 44 , Mahmudullah 6)

Rashid Khan is mixing his pace. He wants to create doubt in the minds of the batsmen. It almost pays off in the final ball as he extracts spin and bounce to beat Mahmudullah. A smile to end the over and two runs from the six balls.

After 35 overs,Bangladesh 161/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 43 , Mahmudullah 5)

Dawlat Zadran to bowl his sixth over. Four singles from the over. Mahmudullah is limping while running between the wickets. He needs some more treatment and the physio is back on the ground after the over.

After 34 overs,Bangladesh 157/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 41 , Mahmudullah 3)

It’s Rashid Khan’s time. Just four singles from the over. Mahmudullah wants to continue but looks like he his having problems while running. Might take some time for him to settle down again. He has compression tape around his calf.

Looks like Mahmudullah has pulled his hamstring. The physio has come to check him. Play is stopped for the moment.

Following the impressive outing against India on Saturday, Mujeeb has once again come up with another brilliant performance. Has spun the ball both ways today and managed to get three important scalps so far. Interestingly, he played for Hampshire in the T20 Blast last year and this was his home ground.

After 33 overs,Bangladesh 153/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 39 , Mahmudullah 1)

Naib continues. Mahmudullah, the new batsman, is in the middle. The batsmen didn’t take any risks as they score just two runs in the over. Wickets are key for Bangladesh as they look to post a total of 250 from here.

After 32 overs,Bangladesh 151/4 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 38 , Mahmudullah 0)

Just too good from Mujeeb. He varies his length superbly in the over and then comes up with the clincher in the final ball. Sarkar was looking to get going but fails to read the carrom ball and it results in his fall. Mujeeb has two more overs so we will see how the captain will use him.

Sarkar falls

Mujeeb once again with the breakthrough. Sarkar tries to push the ball on the leg-side, misses the shot and gets trapped in front of the wickets. The on-field umpire takes a good look and gives it out. Bangladesh review the decision. Sarkar walks back to the pavilion after ball-tracking shows it’s umpire call with the ball hitting the stumps.

After 31 overs,Bangladesh 148/3 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 35 , Soumya Sarkar 3)

Naib continues. Sarkar goes a dangerous single after pushing the ball on the leg-side. The fielder comes up with a direct hit and it did look out. Unfortunately for Afghanistan, Sarkar’s bat just crosses the line on time. Just four runs from the over.

After 30 overs,Bangladesh 143/3 ( Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 33 , Soumya Sarkar 0)

Good captaincy from Naib. Brings back Mujeeb to break the partnership and the move worked wonders. Shakib, set after making a half-century, fails to read the carrom ball from the spinner. Soumya Sarkar comes to bat next and plays all the remaining four balls without scoring a run.

That’s a body blow. Shakib heads back to the dressing room and Afghanistan are back in the game now. Beautifully bowled by Mujeeb. The ball came in with the arm and the batsman was trapped right in front. Three wickets have fallen today in this innings so far and all three have gone to the spinners.

Brilliant from Mujeeb!

Shakib goes back to the pavilion after making 51. Mujeeb’s carrom ball does the trick as Shakib, playing for a conventional turn, gets trapped in front of the wicket. He doesn’t stay back to review the call. He knows he is gone for sure.

Shakib lbw b Mujeeb 51(69)

After 29 overs,Bangladesh 142/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 51 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 32)

Two good overs from Naib. Both Rahim and Shakib tried to pick the gaps and rotate the strike but the plan didn’t quite work out. Naib changes his pace well to stop the run-flow. Just three runs from the over.

Most 50-plus scores for left-handed batsmen in an edition of ODI World Cup:

5 – Graeme Smith, 2007

5 – Yuvraj Singh, 2011

5 – Shakib Al Hasan, 2019*

After 28 overs,Bangladesh 139/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 50 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 30)

What a tournament Shakib is having! Yet another match and yet another half-century. Struggled to take a single in the previous over but gets the chance in this one. He’s not done yet though. He wants to score his third century of this World Cup.

Nabi concedes just two runs in the over.

After 27 overs,Bangladesh 136/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 49 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 28)

Wow, out of nowhere, Gulbadin Naib bowls a maiden. Shakib, batting on 49, was looking for a single to complete his half-century, but fails to find gaps. This is good stuff from the Afghan captain.

After 26 overs,Bangladesh 136/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 49 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 28)

Nabi with his seventh of the innings. Starts off with a blinder as the ball takes the inside edge off the bat, but tough chance for the keeper. Rahim tries to place it towards third man but is taken aback with the sharp turn. The batsmen then run for a two. Total four runs from the over.

Finally some momentum in the Bangladesh innings. Both Shakib and Mushfiqur are trying to up the scoring rate, which is currently touching the 5.5 run mark. Also, some sloppiness on the field by the Afghans have helped their cause as well.

Players to score 1,000-plus runs and take 25-plus wickets in ICC ODI World Cups:

Sanath Jayasuriya

Shakib Al Hasan*

After 25 overs,Bangladesh 132/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 48 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 25)

Gulbadin Naib, the captain, comes back into the attack. Gives away eight runs with Tamim and Shakib running three doubles. Also both batsmen bring up 50-run partnership for the third wicket.

Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim became the first pair to add 3,000 runs for Bangladesh in ODIs on 126/2.

After 24 overs,Bangladesh 124/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 41 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 24)

Decent five balls from Rahmat. The final ball is pitched up and Rahim pierces the gap on the leg-side to get four runs. He shows his strength with his trademark sweep shot.

Fuller length and Rahim sweeps it to perfection. There’s a big gap on the leg-side, without any protection on the deep mid-wicket boundary.

After 23 overs,Bangladesh 117/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 39 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 19)

Both batsmen doing well to rotate strike. Rahim top-edged a pull, but the ball falls in safe territory and races away to the boundary. Dawlat gives away two doubles, two singles along with a four.

Top-edge from Rahim and the ball flies over the keeper’s head for a boundary. Could’ve been a dismissal on another day.

After 22 overs,Bangladesh 107/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 36 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 12)

Not so good fielding performance from Afghanistan. Rahim cuts the ball towards backward point with the fielder failing to stop the ball and it results in a two. Four runs off the over.

Also, Shakib becomes the first Bangladesh batsman to score 1000 runs in World Cups. Well done!

Milestone alert for Shakib!

After 21 overs,Bangladesh 103/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 35 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 9)

Dawlat concedes two in his first ball. Shakib goes for a quick single after pushing the ball towards mid-off. Mujeeb collects the ball and then throws it at bowler’s end to concede an overthrow. Rahim then finds space on the leg-side and ensures he takes two off the third. Dawlat comes up with a good change of pace delivery in the fifth ball, which beats Shakib. He ends the over giving away one more single.

After 20 overs,Bangladesh 95/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 31 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 6)

Rashid with his third over of the match. Two singles from the first two balls. There’s bounce for the third and Mushfiqur gently places it towards the third-man for two runs. Overall, six runs from the over.

Meanwhile, Shakib overtakes David Warner as the leading run-getter in this World Cup.

After a gloomy morning, things are getting brighter here. The sun has come out. This will help the pitch and outfield to settle down. Bangladesh, after losing Tamim need a steady period now. Shakib and Mushfiqur — two experienced campaigners are at the crease and this pair is the key for the Tigers.

After 19 overs,Bangladesh 89/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 29 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 2)

Dawlat comes back into the attack. Just four runs from the over. Shakib tries for a cheeky boundary by placing the ball towards third-man. Asghar Afghan comes up with a good dive to stop the balls before the rope and saves two runs.

After 18 overs,Bangladesh 85/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 27 , Mushfiqur Rahim (W) 1)

Top, top stuff from Rashid. Starts off with a terrific ball to trap Shakib in front of the wickets. The on-field umpire gives out but Shakib reviews instantly. Good call from the batsman as the replay shows the ball is missing the stumps. Rashid shows frustration but should be happy with his spell. He’s asking questions to the batsmen.

After 17 overs,Bangladesh 82/2 ( Shakib Al Hasan 26 , )

A good over from Nabi. Gets the crucial breakthrough with the wicket of the dangerous Tamim Iqbal. Starts off on a decent note, follows it up with a bad ball but then takes the wicket off his final delivery. Good stuff.

BALL!

Tamim goes after making 36. Good comeback from Nabi after a bad ball. Not much turn but good bounce as Tamim misses his shot. Ball hits the top of off stump.

Poor ball from Nabi!

On the leg-side and short so Tamim makes sure he punishes the bad ball. Smashes it towards the deep mid-wicket boundary for a four.

Rashid doesn’t like bowling against the left handers. But Afghanistan have no other option but to introduce him into the attack against Shakib and Tamim. There is turn available on this surface but it is slow turn so far and batsmen have got enough time to adjust to it.

After 16 overs,Bangladesh 76/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 31 , Shakib Al Hasan 25)

Rashid Khan takes the ball for his first over. Good start from leg-spinner conceding just two runs. Tamim and Shakib showing patience. They realised that they will have to work from runs on this wicket.

Tamim Iqbal-Shakib Al Hasan last 10 stands in ODIs:

51* (Today), 79, 69, 55, 15, 52, 0, 81, 97, 207

Gulabdin Naib is playing his 100th international match for Afghanistan today.

After 15 overs,Bangladesh 74/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 30 , Shakib Al Hasan 24)

Nabi continues and it’s a decent one from the off-spinner. Just one run from his six balls. The ball is gripping so there’s spin in offering. Runs off spinners is looking tough at the moment.

After 14 overs,Bangladesh 73/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 30 , Shakib Al Hasan 23)

Naib not looking too sharp with the ball. Bangladesh batsmen know this and are taking him for runs. Two fours in the over plus four singles. Tamim looking set on 30.

Played!

Short-pitched from Naib and Tamim takes the offering with a solid pull on the leg-side. No protection down at the deep mid-wicket and that means it’s a four.

Meanwhile, here’s what Faf du Plessis had to say about SA’s World Cup campaign.

Down the track for a four!

Tamim steps up against Naib and sends the ball towards the long-on boundary. Didn’t time it that good but gets the power and the fielder at mid-on was standing wide.

After 13 overs,Bangladesh 61/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 20 , Shakib Al Hasan 21)

Nabi comes on for his fourth over. The first ball is a wide, pitching outside off and spins further away. Shakib goes for a late cut in the fifth ball, beating the backward-point fielder for a two. Four runs from the over.

After 12 overs,Bangladesh 56/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 19 , Shakib Al Hasan 18)

Gulbadin Naib takes charge with the ball. Forces a leading edge off Shakib in the second ball, but it’s safe. The batsman tries to work it around on the leg-side but didn’t get his timing right. Just one dot ball in the over as the bowler goes for seven in his first.

After 11 overs,Bangladesh 49/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 18 , Shakib Al Hasan 12)

Mujeeb comes on to bowl his sixth over. Five runs from the over. Tamim and Shakib making sure they don’t take any risks against him. Will have to see if Naib gives him one more over in this spell.

Afghanistan spinners are doing the exact same thing, which they did against India. They are bowling stump-to-stump line and aren’t allowing the batters any opportunity to free their arms. Playing any cross batted shot against them is quite difficult at this point and both Shakib and Tamim should concentrate on ones and twos.

After 10 overs,Bangladesh 44/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 15 , Shakib Al Hasan 10)

Four good balls from Nabi but he sends a short one in the fifth which Shakib punishes with a boundary. Sloppy fielding from Afghanistan in the final ball. Tamim steals a single and also gets an extra run after poor throw from short mid-wicket at the bowler’s end.

Shot!

Short from Nabi, Shakib makes room and cuts it for a boundary. He waited for a bad ball and once he gets it, he makes sure he takes full advantage.

After 9 overs,Bangladesh 35/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 12 , Shakib Al Hasan 4)

Five dot balls on a trot from Mujeeb but he sends the next one down the leg-side. A wide followed by another dot ball so just one run from the over.

After 8 overs,Bangladesh 34/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 12 , Shakib Al Hasan 4)

Nabi bowls his second of the day. Another decent over from the off-spinner with just three runs. he does well not to give away any loose balls and the batsmen are showing respect. They’re not looking to manufacture shots.

After 7 overs,Bangladesh 31/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 10 , Shakib Al Hasan 3)

Mujeeb bowls his fourth over. Once again, just three runs from the over. Tamim, on the non-striker’s end, had to run quickly for a single off the third ball. A better throw could’ve been dangerous.

After 6 overs,Bangladesh 28/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 8 , Shakib Al Hasan 2)

Mohammad Nabi comes into the attack. Starts off on a good note, conceding just three runs from his first over. Bangladesh’s two best batsmen are in the middle. Tamim and Shakib will look to build a good partnership from here.

Afghanistan draw the first blood. Liton was looking good before being outfoxed by Mujeeb. I thought, the batsman misjudged the pace of the ball and played his shot a bit early. Nevertheless, Bangladesh’s star performer Shakib is at the crease now. He has two centuries in this competition and today in this crunch game his team wants its experienced pro to make a significant all-round contribution.

Shakib Al Hasan has a batting average of 58.58 in ODIs while batting at No.3 — the 2nd best among all the players (minimum 20 innings). He has scored 40-plus runs in each of his last six ODI innings.

After 5 overs,Bangladesh 25/1 ( Tamim Iqbal 6 , Shakib Al Hasan 1)

A great over for Afghanistan. Liton Das has been timing the ball really well but comes shot against Mujeeb. Goes for the good-looking cover drive but sends it to the covers fielder. Goes for 16 off 17 balls. Shakib Al Hasan comes next and takes a single immediately. Just two runs from the over.

GONE!

Liton Das departs after Mujeeb strikes in the second ball of the over. Goes for a drive on the off-side but couldn’t keep it down. The covers fielder Shahidi takes a good low catch. The on-field umpires check the catch with the third-umpire. It’s inconclusive so he sticks with the original decision. Gone for 16.

After 4 overs,Bangladesh 23/0 ( Liton Das 16 , Tamim Iqbal 5)

Dawlat pitches it up and Liton places it on the leg-side. No protection there but the slow outfield takes the pace off the ball. Liton and Tamim run three. In the fifth ball of the over, Tamim times it to perfectly to beat the mid-off fielder for a four. Seven runs from the over.

Pitched up delivery from Dawlat and Tamim beats the mid-off fielder to earn a four. The ball was in the air was sometime but too tough for the fielder. Good shot!

After 3 overs,Bangladesh 16/0 ( Liton Das 13 , Tamim Iqbal 1)

Mujeeb continues. A good over from the off-spinner as he concedes just three singles in his second over. He’s getting the spin but nothing threatening so far.

After 2 overs,Bangladesh 13/0 ( Liton Das 11 , Tamim Iqbal 0)

Dawlat Zadran with the second over. Liton Das showcases his sublime timing with a boundary off the third ball. A back-foot punch to beat the off-side fielders. He takes a single off the final ball of the over to retain strike. Five runs from the over.

Interesting decision by Bangladesh to open with Liton Das. Throughout the tournament Soumya Sarkar opened the inning alongside Tamim. Perhaps, they made this strategic change in order to pack their middle order with left handers, which will make things difficult for leggie Rashid Khan.

Sweet! Liton Das once again with a sublime timing to send the ball towards covers boundary.

After 1 overs,Bangladesh 8/0 ( Liton Das 6 , Tamim Iqbal 0)

As expected,  Mujeeb opens the bowling for Afghanistan. The second ball of the over spins a good deal and beats the keeper on the leg-side for a wide and two runs. Mujeeb’s next is bit short and Liton Das pounces on it and places it perfectly to beat the off-side fielders for a four. One more single in the fifth ball so a total of 8 runs from the first over.

Mujeeb’s second ball is a bit shot and Liton makes most of it. Places it perfectly on the off-side to beat the inner fielders for a four.

The match will start 10 minutes late due to wet outfield. Here’s hoping we will not have many rain interruptions in the match.

How about some warm-up?

There has been rain around in Southampton of late and the forecast is for light showers in the second half of this match. Interesting scenario this for both teams now. In an ideal circumstance, Afghanistan would have liked to bat first here on this used surface, but due to the conditions perhaps, they have decided otherwise. However, Mortaza during the toss confirmed that he would have batted first here. So, both teams wanted what they were hoping for.

Pitch report: “We saw a lot of turn here for Afghanistan against India. The spinners of Afghanistan used all the variations and because it’s the same pitch you would expect the same if they hit the right length,” says Ian Bishop.

Two changes for both teams:
