Tourist couple trapped in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil district has been rescued

A foreign tourist couple, who were trapped in snow in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil district, was rescued on Tuesday, officials said. “Micheal Mobius and his wife got trapped in snow between Pudzong La and Rang dum on Monday,” a district administration official told IANS.  “They somehow sent a distress signal to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, where we received a SoS following which the Deputy Commissioner of Kargil immediately requested the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and Commissioner Civil Aviation Jammu and Kashmir to request the Air Force to launch a rescue operation.” An aerial rescue operation was launched on Tuesday morning and the couple were air-lifted by an Indian Air Force chopper to Leh, according to the official. The couple is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Army units have been deployed along the Beas, Ravi and Sutlej rivers. The teams have been asked to keep their flood relief columns ready in case the civil administration requisitions their deployment

Villages near Sutlej River have been put on high alert and families are being moved out of low-lying areas, The Indian Express report said.

Over 500 pilgrims stranded near Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath Valley

After hours of incessant rains in the Kedarnath Valley in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district, a five-metre stretch of the bridle path near Lincholi, was washed out leaving over 500 pilgrims stranded in the Valley. Another landslide at Phata, around 15 kilometres from Kedarnath, resulted in the national highway getting blocked, The Indian Express reported.

Landslide kills family of five in J&K; Jammu-Srinagar National Highway re-opened

In Jammu and Kashmir, five members of a family, including three minors, were killed Monday when their house was buried under debris after a landslide in the Doda district, while 29 people stranded in the Kathua district after flash floods were rescued. “A total of 29 persons, including six women and 10 children, were rescued from various flood-hit areas of the Kathua district during overnight operations,” a police officer told PTI.

Meanwhile, with an improvement in the weather, authorities on Monday morning re-opened the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway for traffic.

People residing in the low-lying areas, especially in Kangra, Chamba, Kullu and Mandi districts, are being evacuated, officials said.

Beas river flowing over danger mark in Himachal Pradesh; Army rescues 21 people in Kullu

Five people, including a minor girl, had died and as many were injured in separate incidents during heavy rains in Kullu, Kangra and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday, officials said. Several houses were also swept away in flash floods as the Beas river is flowing at a dangerous level.

An Indian Air Force team had rescued, with the help of a chopper, 21 people stranded due to flash floods at Dobi in the Kullu district in the last 48 hours, PTI reported.

49,000 cusecs of water to be released today from Himachal Pradesh’s Pong Dam

According to several media reports, more than 49,000 cusecs of water will be released from the Pong Dam in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district on Tuesday afternoon as the water level in the dam is nearing the danger mark.
