Which counties in Florida are the deadliest for COVID?

Miami-Dade has the most deaths from the novel coronavirus, but two other counties — Martin and Manatee — rank higher in deaths per 100,000 population, according to data compiled by the Florida Medical Examiners Commission.

Brevard County, with more than 100 deaths, lands 23rd among the state's 67 counties, based on medical examiner's data.

But looking at death rates based on Florida Department of Health's data, a different picture emerges. Brevard ranks 40th. Hendry, Sawannee and Jackson top the list, due to different death numbers and the fact that just a few more cases can bump up the rate in counties with smaller populations.

FLORIDA TODAY obtained the statewide coronavirus deaths from the Florida Medical Examiners Commission and compiled COVID-19 death statistics from the Florida Department of Health.

The medical examiners numbers differ from the Florida Department of Health's, and tend to lag behind due to the difference in time that hospitals report deaths to each and/or the timing of when medical examiners district offices report deaths that go into the database.

For some counties, the medical examiners numbers will be higher, for others lower. This can distort the death rate for counties with smaller populations and fewer cases, compared to larger populated counties with more cases.

We present both datasets here, as is, so you can search to see how your county fares. Type your county in the search box below. You can click the top of the column you want to sort by. Sorting by deaths per 100,000 (ME) medical examiners column brings Martin County to the top of the list, while sorting by the per 100,000 (DOH) department of health column brings Hendry County to the top:
