Growing up just outside of Bangor, Maine wasn’t appreciated until much later in life and although I do not live there now, I visit often.

Yes, on occasion, I’ve run into Stephen King at local bookstores and sporting events, but it’s the day-to-day culture that is unique and charming for such a small, out-of-the-way city.

Often times, Bangor sees travelers passing through, en route to the popular, summer tourist destination of Bar Harbor. While this island gem is not to be missed, I encourage visitors to also take a moment after landing at Bangor International Airport to enjoy the nooks and crannies of this central Maine locale.

What’s great about the recommendations is that you can walk between almost all of them.

Dining

11 Central- Open for dinner and known to be the go-to date night spot in downtown Bangor, 11 Central serves a sophisticated menu that changes fairly often and has drink options that are just as delightful.

Paddy’s Murphy’s- Don’t sleep on this Irish pub. Sure, the nightlife and live entertainment get most of the praise, but their menu is also something to write home about.

Blaze- Wood-fired pizza is the name of the game at Blaze, but the rest of the menu certainly shouldn’t be overlooked. One of the few real brunches in town, so if you’re in Bangor on a Sunday, this is a must. A limited late-night menu is also available for those needing a bite to eat before hitting the hay.

Oriental Jade- I’ve traveled around the globe and I swear there is no better Chinese food than this. Whether you dine-in and indulge in a variety of authentic menu options or opt for delivery, you’ll get the same high quality cuisine. The egg rolls and pork fried rice go unmatched. Sushi lover? They've got you covered.

Activities

Treworgy’s- Technically, you’ll have to travel 8 miles East of Bangor to visit Treworgy’s, but the detour is worth it. From cross country skiing trails in the winter, to a petting zoo, ice cream shop in the summer; and corn maze with apple picking in the fall, this is a place the whole family will enjoy. Other seasonal activities include: wreath making, visiting the pumpkin patch, enjoying a hayride and listening to local bluegrass.

Maine Discovery Museum- If you have little ones who need to burn some energy, this is the perfect place. With three floors of interactive fun, including rotating activities and crafts most days, children and their adults will marvel at the thoughtful features here. Grab take out from Fork and Spoon next door and enjoy the organic eats in the museum break room.

Penobscot Theater Company- This is one of my favorite theaters. The local talent never fails to delight an audience and I love how they incorporate the area youth in their performances. Seating is limited so definitely check out the website beforehand and reserve seats. Located the in the heart of downtown, dinner and a show is very common.

Shopping

Mexicali Blues- Whether you’re after a new tie-dye, some unique jewelry, prayer flags or other tchotchkes, this local business will steal your heart. Mexicali Blues not only has a variety of different products, but these items are sourced ethically and responsibly from various parts of the world.

Rock and Art Shop- If you could take all of nature’s unique aspects, from rocks to creatures and beyond, and put them under one roof, it would be this one. All ages will enjoy this one-of-a-kind store

Grasshopper Shop- You can actually shop here before leaving the airport. And if you are not flying, but want unique gifts from Maine, don’t leave without stopping here. Unlike your typical airport, parking at BGR is a cinch. In fact, all Grasshopper customers enjoy two hours of free parking.

Wellness

Penobscot River Walkway- The Bangor Waterfront is home to an array of seasonal festivals, concerts, outdoor markets and fundraisers. But no matter the time of year, the walkway is open and a great way to stretch the legs. In the winter, you may catch the Coast Guard breaking the ice on the river. In the summer, you’ll have a variety of food truck options and may even catch the sounds of a nearby concert. A parking lot is free and easily accessible.

Bangor City Forest- Located on the edge of town, Bangor City Forest is a place where locals go to unwind, exercise and catch-up with friends. Whether you are jogging, pushing a stoller or on bicycle, there are trails for your fitness level and time frame. Check the log book on your way in to see what creatures visitors have seen lately.

OmLand Yoga-With a central location, there’s sure to be a Yoga class to fit your experience. Not only is this studio near so many other attractions, but also offers classes in the neighboring towns of Orono and Brewer, should those better suit your needs. The instructors are a diverse group of individuals, all making you feel completely comfortable on your Yoga journey.
