Katy Perry, Sam Smith, Nicki Minaj And Whitney Houston: Five Major Moves On This Week's U.K. Singles Chart

This article is more than 4 years old.

For the first time since she passed away, Whitney Houston is back inside the top five in the U.K., and her current single "Higher Love" seems to have the momentum to continue to climb in the coming weeks. Behind her, Sam Smith returns gloriously, while Katy Perry's new single underperforms...at least for now.

Here’s a look at five of the most important moves on this week’s U.K. singles chart.

No. 5 - Kygo - “Higher Love (ft. Whitney Houston)”

After breaking into the top 10 just a short time ago, EDM powerhouse Kygo and late, great vocalist Whitney Houston see their innovative collaboration “Higher Love” jump to No. 5. The track is Kygo’s first title to lift that high, and it’s Houston’s first in 10 years. Her single “Million Dollar Bill” stalled at the same position.

No. 7 - Sam Smith - “How Do You Sleep”

When Sam Smith’s new single “How Do You Sleep” debuted a few weeks back, it was a bit surprising it didn’t immediately appear inside the top 10, as the singer remains incredibly popular in his home country. Now, the electronic pop tune has jumped into the highest region, granting Smith his eleventh such success.

No. 40 - Megan Thee Stallion - “Hot Girl Summer (ft. Nicki Minaj)”

Megan Thee Stallion has quickly become one of the most exciting names in hip-hop, and now she’s finally scored a hit single in the U.K. that justifies the deafening buzz. “Hot Girl Summer” debuts on the U.K. singles chart at No. 40, immediately becoming a certified hit, even if it disappears next week. The song, which features Nicki Minaj, is Stallion’s first appearance in the U.K., while Minaj has now placed well over 60 songs on the tally.

No. 43 - Katy Perry - “Small Talk”

Pop superstar Katy Perry seems to be gearing up to release a new album at some point, perhaps even later this year, and “Small Talk” is likely the latest single from the project. “Small Talk” is Perry’s thirtieth entry in the U.K., and while it misses making it into the top 40, it may rise as promotion of the tune gets going.

No. 99 - Aitch - “Daily Duppy”

As his true breakout smash “Taste (Make It Shake)” lifts to a new high point of No. 4, rising U.K.-based hip-hop talent Aitch debuts a new track on the singles chart. “Daily Duppy” lands at No. 99, granting the musician his fifth placement. Impressively, all of his successes have charted in 2019.
