If you’re one of the millions of New York City denizens who rides the subway every morning, chances are at one point or another you’ve dreamed of being somewhere [read: anywhere] else.

Starting today, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) in partnership with The Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau (HVCB) could make your dreams come true with the announcement that they’ll be giving away a free six-night, seven-day trip to one lucky New Yorker (and a guest) to Hawaii.

“New Yorkers are some of the hardest working people on the planet and the subway is a pivotal part of their everyday lives,” Jay Talwar, chief marketing officer of HVCB said in a statement. “ We appreciate the hustle of New York City, but know that New Yorkers crave time to get refreshed and inspired.”

Starting Tuesday April 23 through Tuesday, April 30, eight participating MTA subway stations around the NYC area will be filled with 250,000 Hawaii-branded MetroCards. Anyone who purchases one of these refillable cards can go to www.hawaii.nyc, enter the code printed on the back and complete the registration where they’ll be entered to win a free trip to one of four Hawaiian-islands including Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Island of Hawaii. According to the HVCB, the drawing to select the winner will be held on Wednesday, May 8th and the winner will be notified shortly thereafter.

The MTA which provides service to all five NYC boroughs including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx has chosen the following subway stations to participate in the giveaway:

  • 72nd & Amsterdam – (1, 2, 3)
  • 86th &  Lexington – (4, 5, 6)
  • 59th - Columbus Circle – (A, B, C, D)
  • 23rd & 8th - (C, E)
  • 14th Street Union Square – (L, N, Q, R, 4, 5, 6)
  • Broadway & Lafayette at Houston – (B, D, F, M)
  • Fulton Street – (A, C, J, Z, 2, 3, 4, 5)
  • Atlantic Av-Barclays Center – (B, Q, 2, 3, 4, 5)

According to the HVCB, the Hawaii-MetroCard promotion called HIxNY, is the first of its kind for a New York City MetroCard to be used for entry into a giveaway and was launched as part of a broader campaign that's focused on attracting New Yorker’s to the Hawaiian Islands.

“New Yorkers use the subway to travel to different neighborhoods for their unique experiences, in similar fashion each of the six islands of Hawaii provide a unique set of experiences,” Talwar said. “The MTA brings New Yorkers to the places they want to go, and our goal is to remind New Yorkers that they can maintain this mindset when planning a vacation in the Islands of Hawaii.”

The giveaway comes on the heels of a new MTA fare hike that just went into effect on Sunday April 21. The MTA voted to approve fare and toll increases in February 2019 as part of a unilateral plan to support the quality and quantity of service that “will allow the MTA to continue to provide safe and reliable service.”

While reliable service still remains to be seen, if you don’t win the big MTA prize in May don’t sweat it. HVCB, as part of its HIxNY campaign, has also collaborated with six NYC-based brands including Governors Ball, Barry’s Bootcamp, Best Made, The Infatuation, Saturdays NYC and the Four Seasons and will be giving away free trips to a different corresponding Hawaiian Island each month.
