Tributes Paid To Ex-Soldier Killed In Westminster Terror Attack Two Years On

Floral tributes have been laid at the memorial to former soldier PC Keith Palmer in London.

MPs have led tributes and flowers have been laid at the memorial to a former soldier to mark the second anniversary of his death. 

PC Keith Palmer was stabbed to death by terrorist Khalid Masood close to the entrance gates to the Palace of Westminster in March 2017.

Four others were also killed on Westminster Bridge during the terror attack which left dozens more injured.

MPs in the House of Commons observed a minute's silence to mark the anniversary, with shadow policing minister Louise Haigh saying Mr Palmer is remembered every time they enter parliament.

Ms Haigh said: "I'm sure, like many other members, not a day goes by that I enter this place that I don't remember the ultimate sacrifice that he paid in defending us and defending democracy".

Home Office Minister Victoria Atkins said: "Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, and of course our thoughts are also with the wider policing family".

Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood, a former Army officer, rushed to Mr Palmer's aid after he was stabbed by Masood.

Mr Ellwood told Forces News that he was "haunted" by the fact he could not save PC Palmer.  

Mr Palmer held the rank of Bombardier after joining the Royal Artillery in August 1987. He later left the Army at his own request in August 2001.

The former Bombardier was then part of 100 Regiment Royal Artillery as a reservist.

He was hailed as a hero for his actions and was awarded a posthumous bravery medal by the Queen for confronting Masood.
