#7 Days Until Mississippi State Football: Marcus Murphy

The 2019 Mississippi State football season begins one week from today! The Bulldogs will be playing Louisiana next Saturday at 11 a.m. CT at Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Today’s spotlighted player is No. 7, Marcus Murphy.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder was rated as four-star product out of West Point, Mississippi. He was rated the No. 12 athlete in the country and the No. 2 overall recruit in the state of Mississippi according to 247Sports. He was also rated as a No. 3 overall recruit in the state according to Rivals.

He tallied 7,106 yards of total offense and accounted for 82 total touchdowns during his prep career at West Point High School. He also led the school to back-to-back MHSAA 5A Championships in 2016 and 2017. He was named to Clarion Ledger’s Dandy Dozen leading up to his senior season with the Green Wave. He rushed the ball 201 times for 1,819 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also passed 1,012 yards and nine touchdowns on 50-of-86 passing. He then showed out in the 2017 MHSAA Championship game, rushing the ball 23 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns.

After the season, Murphy played in the 2017 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game, leading Mississippi with a game-high 124 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries as Mississippi earned a 42-7 win.

As a junior, Murphy rushed for 1,756 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior. He also threw for 97 yards and two touchdowns on four completions. He led the West Point to the 2016 MHSAA 5A Championship and rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries in West Point’s 29-8 victory.

Murphy first committed to Mississippi State on May 24, 2016. He decommitted from MSU on Jan. 3, 2017, but ultimately recommitted to MSU on May 2, 2017. He signed on Dec. 20, 2017 and enrolled in January 2018 and went through spring practice.

As a true freshman last season, he played in 12 games, primarily on special teams. He tallied seven tackles, including 0.5 for loss, and one pass breakup.

Heading into the 2019 season, Murphy will be part of the free safety rotation behind junior safety C.J. Morgan.

On a personal note, Murphy plays for his late mother who passed away unexpectedly after the bowl game last season and his son Mason, who is currently battling a rare genetic abnormality due to being born without Chromosome 7 and is in need of a bone marrow transplant.
