DOVER — The Dover Democratic Committee’s February session will consist of two programs: a meet and greet with presidential hopeful John Delaney and “Immigration: The Refugee Experience.” The dual events will take place on Feb. 12 at the Dover Public Library starting at 6 p.m.

Delaney, D-MD, has announced his intention to run for president in 2020. He has represented Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District since 2012. Prior to entering politics, Delaney graduated from Columbia University and the Georgetown University Law Center. After completing his education, he launched and led two successful companies by the time he was 40 years old. He is the only member of Congress to have served as CEO of a publicly traded company, explained DDC spokesman Pat Ross.

As a candidate, Rep. Delaney says he is concentrating on: Government for the People, Opportunity and the American Dream, Jobs and Economic Growth, and a Safer and Stronger America. It is an agenda he says is heavily influenced by his background. “It’s my blue-collar roots, faith, commitment to social justice and strong progressive values that inspired me to … commit my life to public service,” he said.

'Immigration: The Refugee Experience'

Political chaos, natural disasters, war, and unrest have led to the displacement of 68.5 million people around the world. Of that number, 25.4 million are seeking refuge in other countries, with 3.1 people seeking asylum. The Dover Democratic Committee is sponsoring “Immigration: The Refugee Experience” as a reflection of the group’s commitment to uphold the dignity of all people, said Ross.

“The current political climate in the United States focuses attention to the plight of immigrants among us; many of whom find day-to-day survival to be a challenge while living in fear,” explained Ross. “Area residents who left their home countries and resettled in the US will carry that message. By sharing their first-hand experience, they will increase attendees’ understanding of refugees who may need community support as they strive to build a better and safer life here.”
