Why I’m running for Portsmouth City Council

Aug. 20 — To the Editor:

After graduating from the nearby University of New Hampshire, my wife, Megan and I chose to settle here in Portsmouth. It was the best decision we have made as a couple. We instantly fell in love with this place. It is unique, charming and has something for everyone. Whether you are looking for great schools, great restaurants or a lively art scene, Portsmouth is the spot to be. Chiefly, it is my love for my home city that has driven me to put my name on the ballot and run for City Council in the upcoming November elections.

However, I am extremely concerned about the position that Portsmouth has put itself in to attract and retain the next generation of young people and young families to our city. Living here is already out of reach for most, leading places like Dover, Greenland and Exeter as more likely spots for a family to plant roots. We have to fight, and fight hard, to change that unacceptable paradigm. It is simply not sustainable. I hope that my background as an MBA graduate and small business owner can add value to the challenging path we have to navigate.

Above all else, we have to navigate it together. I promise that my campaign will prioritize three things: listen, learn and stay positive. No doubt, it has been a divisive two years given the acrimony over the McIntyre project. My intent with all things, McIntyre included, is to provide a fresh perspective and ideas without the baggage of past votes and decisions. I look forward to the many conversations with the great people of Portsmouth ahead. Thank you for having me in this race.
